You get the whole application and its full source code. Memento installs like any normal Mac program: a double-clickable installer, a menu bar icon, a login item. Once installed it runs entirely on its own — no Claude, no AI, no account, no internet connection, nothing phoning home. If you do use Claude, this skill additionally teaches it to install, diagnose and drive Memento for you, but that is a convenience, not a requirement.

THE PROBLEM

macOS forgets. You spend an afternoon arranging windows across all 16 desktops, restart, and Finder windows land on the wrong desktop, Chrome windows pile onto Desktop 1, and half an hour of your day goes into putting it all back.

Memento remembers where every window lives — including which desktop it lives on — and puts everything back on demand or automatically at login.

WHY IT WORKS WHERE OTHERS DON'T

Most tools restore a window's frame but not its desktop, because macOS has no public API for Spaces. Memento talks to the private SkyLight API — the one Mission Control itself uses — to read a window's desktop and move it to another instantly, with no dragging and no animation.

It also identifies windows by what they are, not what they are called. After a restart, "the Finder window called Downloads" is a brand new window, so title matching is guesswork. Memento stores the folder path for Finder windows and the tab URLs for browser windows, so the right window goes back to the right place every time. If a window is gone entirely, it is re-opened on the correct desktop from that saved identity.

Nothing is trusted on the first attempt: restores run three verification passes, because Finder keeps repositioning its own windows for several seconds after login.

THEMES

A theme is a complete snapshot of all 16 desktops. Keep a Work arrangement, a Music arrangement and a Development arrangement, and switch between them in one click — a way around the 16-desktop ceiling. Apps outside the theme are minimised, never closed.
