Metering architecture

Define billable usage

Specify what counts as one API call, excluded retries, failed requests, free allowance, time zone, aggregation period and rounding. Publish examples before customers rely on the metric.

Event capture

Emit durable usage events with tenant, metric, quantity, event ID and timestamp. Avoid including request payloads or secrets. Use idempotent ingestion and late-arrival handling.

Aggregation

Maintain immutable raw events plus reproducible period aggregates. Reconcile totals against API gateway or service counters. Define correction and dispute workflows.

Customer controls

Provide near-real-time usage dashboard, budget alerts, rate limits and configurable spending caps where feasible. Warn before thresholds and state that delayed data may occur.

Billing and recovery

Lock the billing period after a documented cutoff, calculate charges deterministically and keep audit detail. Handle duplicates, backfills, refunds and plan transitions.

Launch gate

Run shadow billing for several cycles, compare expected and actual totals, verify invoices and customer support readiness before charging.

Measurement and review

Record the baseline, source, date range, denominator and owner. Use one primary measure plus quality guardrails; compare like-for-like cohorts and disclose missing data. Treat estimates as scenarios, not observed outcomes.

Risks and controls

Check relevance, consent, disclosure, workload and downside before scaling. Keep an evidence trail, obtain human review for material commitments, and pause if trust, quality or compliance signals deteriorate.
