tvsub subtitle overlay
Example session with this skill installed
I'm watching a film in Apple TV.app and only have an English SRT. Translate it into Korean and show it with a larger font.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the tvsub subtitle overlay
Step: Check state
Result: Apple TV.app is playing your film, paused at 00:04:12. No overlay is running.
Next: Confirm this is the film you want subtitles for.
Step: Pick the subtitle
Result: Found 1 file in your tvsub library: film.en.srt (English, SRT). Loaded it for this title.
Next: Do you want a glossary for character names before translating?
Step: Translate (dry run)
Result: Estimate only. Nothing was sent yet.
Cues: <cue count from your file>
Batches: <batch count>
Estimated cost: shown in USD for the API backend, or "$0 (included in subscription)" for Claude Code or Codex CLI
Note: Translation sends the subtitle text to the backend you choose.
Next: Say "go" to translate into Korean.
Step: Translate
Result: Wrote film.ko.srt. Cue count and timecodes match the source. Marked ai_draft until you review it.
Next: Loading the Korean file.
Step: Style
Result: Korean glyph check passed for your chosen font. Font size increased.
Next: Starting the overlay.
Step: Start the overlay
Result: Overlay is running over Apple TV.app.
Next: Resume playback. If lines appear early or late, pause on a line of dialogue and tell me which subtitle line it is, and I will calibrate sync.
(Example shape of a session. Actual counts and costs depend on your file and backend.)

About this skill
Watching a film in Apple TV.app on a Mac without subtitles in your language? This skill walks your agent through the tvsub MCP server in the right order, so you get a readable, in-sync subtitle overlay without guessing which tool to call next.
What it does
- Overlay shows an SRT, SMI/SAMI or VTT file you supply on top of Apple TV.app.
- Glossary-aware translation translates the file while keeping character names, honorifics and fixed terms consistent.
- Cost check first runs a dry run that reports cue count, batch count and estimated cost before any real translation.
- Styling changes font, size, color and position, and checks that the font has glyphs for the target language.
- Sync calibration fixes a constant offset with one dialogue anchor and corrects drift with two.
How it works
- Checks what is playing in Apple TV.app.
- Lists your subtitle files and loads the one you pick.
- Optionally builds a glossary, estimates cost, and translates after you agree.
- Applies your style, starts the overlay, and calibrates timing against a line of dialogue.
Requirements
- macOS and tvsub, installed and built.
- The tvsub MCP server (tvsub-mcp, MIT):
uvx tvsub-mcp==0.2.2 --tvsub-root /absolute/path/to/tvsub - For translation only, one of: an Anthropic API key, a signed-in Claude Code CLI, or a signed-in Codex CLI. Subscription CLIs add no API charges.
What it does not do
It does not download or search for subtitles, bypass DRM, modify video, or launch Apple TV.app. You supply subtitle files you have the right to use. Translation sends subtitle text to the backend you choose.
Independent project, not affiliated with Apple, Anthropic or OpenAI.
