Hamilton wrote "If men were angels, no government would be necessary," right?

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the the founding reader

Exact match, with an attribution note. The line is in Federalist No. 51 (The Independent Journal, February 6, 1788), paragraph 4:

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary"

Authorship of No. 51 was historically disputed between Hamilton and Madison, after a list attributed to Hamilton claimed most of the series. This edition credits it to Madison, consistent with Madison's own later list and the modern scholarly consensus (Adair 1944; Mosteller and Wallace 1963). So it is a genuine Federalist line, published under the pen name Publius, and by the current consensus Madison's rather than Hamilton's.

    About this skill

Search the Declaration, Articles of Confederation, Constitution and Bill of Rights, all 85 Federalist essays, the major Anti-Federalist writings (Brutus, the Federal Farmer, Cato and three standalone works) and three founding-era antislavery documents. Retrieve exact passages and whole documents with attribution, dates and reading links, open fifteen curated Federalist-versus-Anti-Federalist debates, trace which writers answered which, and check whether a quotation really appears in these 136 documents and under whose name.

Requires a free connection to The Founding Reader MCP server at https://foundingreader.com/mcp (public, read-only, no account, no API key). This skill contains no code. It teaches your agent when and how to use the server's five tools: search_founding_passages, get_founding_source, get_founding_debate, get_founding_connections and verify_founding_quote.

    Setup

    • Claude.ai or Claude Code: install the plugin from Claude's plugin directory
    • Claude Code without the plugin: claude mcp add --transport http the-founding-reader https://foundingreader.com/mcp
    • Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and other MCP agents: add the URL above as a streamable HTTP MCP server named the-founding-reader.
    • ChatGPT: open the app in ChatGPT

    Try

    • Where do the Federalist Papers discuss the dangers of faction? Quote the key passage.
    • Did Brutus respond directly to anything Hamilton wrote? Show the evidence.
    • Hamilton wrote "If men were angels, no government would be necessary," right?

How it treats sources: only documented-response records count as evidence that one author answered another. "Publius" and "Brutus" are pen names, and disputed-authorship notes are preserved. A quote not found here is reported as not found in this collection, never as fake.
