Explain the Crawlee 4.0.0-rc.1 release notes to our PM. She owns the scraper roadmap and does not read code.

Crawlee 4.0.0-rc.1: what it means for product

In one line: The next major version of the crawling library our scrapers run on is almost final. Upgrading needs a planned engineering task. It is not a drop-in update.

    What changed

    • Input handling moved to the Apify SDK. It needs Apify SDK version 4.0.0-beta.40 or newer.
    • The waiting list of pages is no longer emptied between runs. A second run can pick up pages left over from the first one.
    • Some names in the run statistics changed. Dashboards that read them need updating.

    Fixed

    • A missing robots.txt file (404 error) now means the crawler may visit every page.

Who is affected / action needed

    • Engineering: plan the upgrade with the official guide before the final release. No date is stated in the source.

    Risks and open questions

    • Leftover pages between runs could change results if we run the same job twice. Ask engineering whether we clear them ourselves.

    About this skill

Unlike generic ELI5 or "simplify this" prompts, this skill writes for one named reader (PM, support macro, exec, customer changelog) and proves the rewrite with a script: reading level before and after, jargon left, and a fact diff that fails if any number, version, date or link is lost, changed or invented.

Real sample (22 Oct 2026): the public Crawlee 4.0.0-rc.1 release notes (128 words, Flesch reading ease 27.4, grade 11.6).

    • A quick first draft read well (grade 6.8) but the fact guard FAILED it: it dropped the minimum Apify SDK version (4.0.0-beta.40) and the "robots.txt 404 = crawl everything" rule.
    • The final PM brief: grade 5.1, reading ease 74.1, 4/4 source facts kept, 0 errors. The exact code names went into an engineer appendix that is fact-checked but not scored.
    • The customer changelog: grade 4.5, reading ease 79.5, "Action needed / New / Fixed" bullets, PASS.

    What it does

    • 4 audience modes with their own shape and targets: PM (grade 10 max), support macro (grade 8, 220 words), exec (150 words), customer changelog (grade 8)
    • plain_check.py score: Flesch reading ease, Flesch-Kincaid grade, long sentences, complex-word share, pass/fail per mode
    • plain_check.py jargon: 100-term glossary with plain wording + detection of code names, packages and acronyms; writes a glossary table for the reader
    • plain_check.py facts: diffs numbers, versions, %, money, dates, links and names between source and rewrite; flags lost, changed and invented numbers and dropped "not / no longer / never"
    • Templates for each mode plus rules: effect first, one idea per sentence, nothing invented, who must act and by when
