Corrective design

Source of truth

Create a pending internal order before redirect. Grant access only after a verified Stripe webhook confirms the required payment or subscription state. The success redirect is a user-experience signal, not payment proof.

Webhook handling

Verify signatures using the endpoint secret, persist event IDs, acknowledge quickly and process asynchronously. Make handlers idempotent and tolerate duplicate or out-of-order events.

Access state

Model entitlements separately from checkout sessions. Define active, trialing, past-due, canceled and refunded behavior. Reconcile Stripe subscription state periodically.

Reliability

Use idempotency keys when creating checkout sessions. Handle delayed payment methods, failed invoices, retries, customer portal updates and webhook outages.

Investigation

Find where access is granted, compare timestamps of redirect and webhook, and identify affected orders. Revoke incorrect access through a reviewed process and communicate accurately.

Validation

Test duplicate events, delayed confirmation, refund, dispute, cancellation and webhook replay in test mode. Monitor entitlement mismatches and keep an audit trail.

Measurement and review

Record the baseline, source, date range, denominator and owner. Use one primary measure plus quality guardrails; compare like-for-like cohorts and disclose missing data. Treat estimates as scenarios, not observed outcomes.

Risks and controls

Check relevance, consent, disclosure, workload and downside before scaling. Keep an evidence trail, obtain human review for material commitments, and pause if trust, quality or compliance signals deteriorate.
