Startup Lessons — Failure Case Advisor

Explain what Google Stadia's shutdown can teach an indie builder who has a working technical prototype but little evidence of repeat use. Distinguish the product shutdown, Google's stated explanation, and your own interpretation. End with one practical experiment. This is an illustrative scenario, not a real customer testimonial.

Proving the technology works is not the same as proving people will choose it
Stadia ran games in the cloud and streamed them to players' devices. In its September 2022 shutdown announcement, Google said the service had not gained the user traction it expected and described other potential uses for the underlying technology. This was a product shutdown, not Google closing down. The announcement does not establish that Stadia simply ran out of cash or identify every cause of the decision.
The lesson: test adoption and repeat use separately from technical delivery. That is an interpretation to test in your own project, not a universal explanation of every failed startup.
For an indie prototype, observe whether target users voluntarily choose it again for a real task after the first trial. Record the number who completed the first task, the number with another genuine opportunity to use it, how many returned without prompting, and what they used instead. Set your budget and decision threshold before the test using your own baseline; no meaningful success rate can be inferred from the historical failure sample.
The analogy has limits: your customers, distribution and costs may differ substantially from Stadia's. Low return use could reflect onboarding problems, infrequent demand or a weak offer; investigate the reason before declaring there is no market.

About this skill
Learn from startup setbacks before committing more time and money
Startup Lessons is a free agent skill for founders, indie builders, side-project creators and anyone studying startup failures. It helps clarify the decision you face, find a relevant historical case, explain the business tension, and choose a practical validation step.
What it does
- Reviews a startup idea or an operating problem without turning the conversation into a long questionnaire. It asks at most one material clarification for the same question, then works with the available information.
- Selects one main case and, when useful, one contrasting case based on customers, distribution, delivery, costs and repeat use—not just an industry label.
- Explains what the business offered, how it expected to sustain itself, the key tension, what may transfer to your project, and where the analogy breaks.
- Helps structure experiments, contribution-margin calculations, cash assumptions and post-mortems. Unknown numbers remain unknown.
Included library
The v2.3.0 package contains 1,749 source records across 24 category groups, including an uncategorized group: 936 detailed teaching briefs and 813 research leads. These are records, not 1,749 unique, independently verified companies or equally detailed reports. The source snapshot is September 26, 2026.
The library is a Chinese-language synthesis of Loot Drop's public editorial material, with source links, caution notes and selected primary-source corrections. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Loot Drop. Editorial explanations and the skill's analytical hypotheses are not presented as established causes.
How to use it
Describe an idea, your users and the decision you are considering, or ask about a named company. Example: 'I am building an AI companion for adults living alone. How should I test whether they will return after the initial novelty?' You can also ask directly for a case study without describing your own project.
An optional offline Python 3.9+ search helper uses only the standard library. Markdown indexes and individual case files provide an alternative when the host can read references but cannot execute scripts. Access to supporting files and execution depends on the host agent and platform delivery.
Boundaries
Funding is not money lost. A product shutdown is not necessarily a company failure. A selected failure sample cannot predict your probability of success. This is a dated educational library and a decision-support workflow, not investment advice, a live company database or a guarantee of business results. Private project information is not automatically added to the library. The references are primarily in Chinese; answer language and translation depend on your agent.
How to use
Skills on Agensi run inside your AI agent. Copy the prompt, paste it into your agent, and it connects to Agensi and installs this skill for you. If a payment is needed, your agent shows it to you first.
