My campaign idea for a Lisbon craft brewery: 'Beer brewed by people, not algorithms.' We'd show the brewers' hands, no screens, a tagline against AI. Everyone in the office loves it. Is this original?

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the shadow critic

Not original, as far as I can tell, but "adjacent" is the fair word, and the adjacency is the problem. I could not search, so none of what follows is checked.

Prior art, unchecked. Brands have been taking public "no AI" stances in advertising and beauty for a couple of years: Dove's pledge not to use AI to depict real women, and Aerie's pledge not to use AI-generated bodies. [VERIFY: both pledges, wording and dates] Separately, "handmade by real people" is the oldest move in craft beer: hands, grain, copper, no screens. [VERIFY: search craft-beer and "human-made" campaigns in PT and ES for the closest match] Your idea is those two moves stapled together. What is the same: the enemy and the hands. What differs: I don't know of a Lisbon brewery that has done it. That difference is geography, not an idea.

The thing the office is not saying. "Everyone loves it" tells you the idea is easy to understand. That is a different test from whether anyone would notice it. An anti-AI line is the safe position in a creative office right now, because everyone in the room agrees with it. Agreeing is free. Ask the kill question: what does it cost the brewery to run this? If the answer is nothing, it has the look of an idea. It also defines the beer by what it is against. Nothing in the line says what the beer tastes like, or why it is from Lisbon.

The strongest case for it, at its best. A tagline against AI is timely, it costs almost nothing to produce, and "made by people" is a claim a craft brewery can plausibly own. Plenty of consumers are tired of everything feeling synthetic, and a small brewery has exactly the credibility a big one lacks. If the brief is awareness for a small budget, this wins on speed of comprehension. It loses on the question above: it is a position anyone can copy next week, and bigger brands will.

A weak point to test before you present it. Does the brewery use no software at all? Sensors, fermentation control, an ordering system, a recommendation on its site? Someone will ask, and "no algorithms" is a claim that can be shown false. [VERIFY with the client] A claim that can be broken in one question is not a campaign you want to build on.

Where it could get sharp. The hands are the strong part, because they are specific and true. The anti-AI line is the weak part, because it is a slogan and not a fact. Try it the other way round: show one brewer's hands doing one thing only this brewery does, with the name of the person and the beer. Let the viewer make the AI connection. That version costs something, because it commits to a real person and a real product.

So, two questions for you. If you remove the word "algorithms", what is left that only this brewery could say? And if the client had not asked for a stance on AI, would you still have brought this idea?

    About this skill

Built by a copywriter with a master's degree in clinical psychology, Shadow Critic turns your agent into your shadow: the part of you that sees what you would rather not look at.

Polite feedback is easy to get: three compliments, one soft suggestion, and the feeling that your plan is fine. Shadow Critic is built the other way. It opens with the main problem in a sentence or two, names the assumption you haven't tested, states the strongest case against you, and looks for anyone who already did your "new" idea.

Then it hands you one question you have to answer yourself. Once the idea survives, it switches sides and helps you build the stronger version.

    It works in three acts:

    • The shadow. What you're avoiding, and what a recurring habit (endless polishing, a decision you keep deferring) might be protecting.
    • The evidence. Claims checked, a steelman of the other side, prior art, Carl Sagan's evidence checklist.
    • The build. Drafting, planning and writing with the same rigour.

Say "shadow critic on" and it holds the stance for the whole conversation. Say "off" and it stops.

Tested before launch, twice. Two rounds, eight prompts in all, each answered by Claude with and without the skill and graded blind against checks written in advance. Round one: 18 of 20 with Shadow Critic, 13 of 20 without. Round two, with harder prompts: 18 of 20 with, 14 of 20 without. On one prompt in each round plain Claude did as well; the gap shows where the stakes are personal (a client you keep saying yes to, a plan already announced).

Who it's for: founders and freelancers who make decisions alone; copywriters, creative directors and strategists who need a hard read before a client sees the work; writers stuck in a loop on the same draft; anyone tired of AI that agrees with everything.

About the creator. theogus is a copywriter with about fifteen years in advertising and a master's degree in clinical psychology. Shadow Critic grew out of a long interest in Jungian theory, where the shadow is the part of the self that holds what we avoid. The critic plays that part for you, and then it leaves the conclusions to you.
