Find the best papers on Asian soybean rust management and fungicide resistance since 2015 — and include what was published in Portuguese and Spanish (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay), not just English. Summaries in English, please.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the scientific paper finder
- Generated the document
I searched OpenAlex, Crossref and Semantic Scholar in
English, Portuguese and Spanish (2015 onward), using native terms for each language:
- EN:
Asian soybean rust Phakopsora pachyrhizi management fungicide resistance - PT:
ferrugem asiática da soja Phakopsora pachyrhizi manejo fungicidas - ES:
roya asiática de la soja Phakopsora pachyrhizi manejo fungicidas
491 unique candidates after DOI deduplication — 145 Portuguese, 141 English, 14 Spanish, 191 without a language tag (mostly Crossref). 448 have a DOI, 291 are open access, 83 are in high-prestige journals. Semantic Scholar hit its rate limit and was skipped automatically.
I selected
12 papers (7 EN · 3 PT · 2 ES). One Crossref record had no abstract, so I left it out rather than describe a paper I could not read.
Executive summary
Across English, Portuguese and Spanish literature the picture is consistent: Asian soybean rust is still controlled mainly with site-specific fungicides (DMIs, QoIs, SDHIs), and their efficacy has been eroding in Brazil and Paraguay as resistance mutations such as SdhC-I86F spread. The strongest evidence points to three levers: multisite partners (mancozeb, chlorothalonil), which add 4–7 points of control in field trials and, in models, more than double the effective life of SDHIs; cultural measures such as soybean-free periods that delay inoculum arrival; and fewer, better-timed sprays instead of calendar programs. Genetic resistance, gene silencing (HIGS/SIGS) and Trichoderma-based biocontrol show promise but are not yet field-ready replacements. Gap: Paraguay and other producing countries lack a cooperative efficacy-monitoring network like Brazil's.
Ranking
Selected records (excerpt)
1. Asian soybean rust in Brazil: past, present, and future (EN, Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira, 2016, DOI 10.1590/s0100-204x2016000500002)
Embrapa review of two decades of ASR in Brazil: since the first report in 2001 the fungus survives year-round, control has relied on fungicides whose efficacy is now declining, and regulatory soybean-free periods plus mapped resistance genes became key. Argues integrated management is essential for the crop's sustainability.
Why selected: Most-cited paper in the set (240 citations); Embrapa authorship; the reference review for Brazil
3. SdhC-I86F Mutation in Phakopsora pachyrhizi Is Stable and Can Be Related to Fitness Penalties (EN, Phytopathology, 2022, DOI 10.1094/phyto-10-21-0419-r)
Shows the SdhC-I86F mutation linked to SDHI resistance stayed stable over 36 generations without fungicide, appeared after one generation under SDHI pressure, and carries fitness penalties (higher sensitivity to osmotic and oxidative stress). Mutant populations were also more sensitive to mancozeb.
Why selected: High-impact journal (Phytopathology); direct evidence for resistance management
11. Una carrera contra la pérdida de la eficacia de fungicidas : 20 años de manejo de la roya asiática de la soja en Paraguay (ES, Investigaciones y Estudios - UNA, 2021, DOI 10.47133/ieuna2126b)
Spanish-language account of 20 years of ASR management in Paraguay: site-specific fungicides lost efficacy, forcing carboxamides (2014) and mancozeb (2015) into programs and raising costs. Notes calendar spraying fails as inoculum timing shifts and calls for a national efficacy-monitoring network.
Why selected: Regional literature in Spanish; Paraguay has no cooperative trial network
12. Efecto de mezclas de fungicidas sitio-específicos combinados con mancozeb en el control roya de la soja en el noreste de Paraguay (ES, Summa Phytopathologica, 2023, DOI 10.1590/0100-5405/264911)
Two sowing-date trials in Canindeyú, Paraguay with 18 treatments. Picoxystrobin or azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr were best in the first date, trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole (± bixafen) in the second; adding mancozeb raised control by 3.8–7% and yield by 128–174 kg/ha.
Why selected: Spanish-language field data that mirrors the Brazilian mancozeb findings

About this skill
Most literature searches stop at English — and miss the regional research that matters: Brazilian crop science in Portuguese (SciELO, Embrapa), Latin American field trials in Spanish (Redalyc, Latindex), applied work in French, German, Chinese or Japanese journals.
This skill searches English plus any languages you choose, merges everything by DOI, ranks it with a transparent score and has your agent write every summary in your language, whatever language the paper was written in.
What it does
- Multi-source search — OpenAlex, Crossref and Semantic Scholar (free, no API keys), deduplicated by DOI
- Multi-language passes — one extra search per language (
pt,es,fr,de,zh,ja…) with native technical terms and OpenAlex's language filter, so regional journals actually show up - Journal prestige — h-index and approximate impact factor for every journal; top third flagged ⭐
- Transparent ranking — impact 0.28 · citation velocity 0.24 · prestige 0.20 · recency 0.18 · DOI 0.10, documented and adjustable
- Real curation — off-topic hits removed, the list balanced across approaches and languages (regional papers are not buried just because they have fewer citations), list size adapted to how much good literature exists
- Deliverables — Word report (executive summary + one record per paper) and Excel sheet with a language column; headings in English, Portuguese or Spanish
- Open-access PDFs — downloaded only on request; paywalled papers listed with their DOI
Real example: "Asian soybean rust — management and fungicide resistance", searched in EN/PT/ES → 491 unique candidates (448 with DOI) → 12 selected: 7 English, 3 Portuguese, 2 Spanish, summarized in English.
Never invents papers, DOIs or citations — every record comes from a live API response, and when the APIs return nothing the agent says so.
Requirements: Python 3.9+ (standard library). python-docx + openpyxl optional for .docx/.xlsx — without them you get the same content as .md/.csv; the skill never installs packages without your OK.
Works with: Claude Code, Codex CLI.
