Real-Time Robotics — Measured Latency & Jitter
Example session with this skill installed
I have a ROS 2 control loop running at 500Hz on a Raspberry Pi 4. I am seeing intermittent jitter over 500us. Help me audit the latency budget and suggest kernel optimizations.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the real-time robotics
I have analyzed your 500Hz (2ms period) control loop requirements. A 500us jitter represents 25% of your total period, which is high for a Raspberry Pi 4 running standard Linux.
Latency Audit and Tuning Plan
| Stage | Budget (us) | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor Read | 150 | SPI/I2C via dedicated bit-banging or high-priority IRQ |
| State Estimation | 400 | Fixed-point math or optimized Eigen ops |
| Controller Logic | 300 | ROS 2 StaticSingleThreadedExecutor to avoid overhead |
| Actuator Write | 150 | DMA-based PWM or dedicated hardware peripheral |
| Total Margin | 1000 | Remaining time for system interrupts and context switches |
Kernel Optimization Commands
# 1. Isolate CPUs 2 and 3 for the control loop in /boot/cmdline.txt
# Add: isolcpus=2,3 nohz_full=2,3 rcu_nocbs=2,3
# 2. Set CPU governor to performance to prevent frequency scaling latency
echo performance | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
# 3. Apply RT priorities to the ROS 2 process (SCHED_FIFO)
chrt -f -p 98 <ros2_node_pid>
# 4. Move networking and disk IRQs away from isolated cores
echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/irq/eth0/smp_affinity # Example for eth0 on Core 0
Measured Latency Analysis
Run the following to capture the baseline jitter before applying changes:
cyclictest -l100000 -m -n -p99 -i2000 -h400 > jitter_baseline.txt
Then process with
python3 scripts/latency_report.py jitter_baseline.txt --period-us 2000 --deadline-us 500 --cyclictest
Next steps
- Apply
mlockall()in your C++ node to prevent page faults during execution. - Set your ROS 2 QoS to
Reliablewith a small history depth to reduce middleware jitter. - Disable C-states in the firmware to prevent wake-up latency from deep sleep.

About this skill
PREEMPT_RT, RTOS and ROS 2 loops with deadlines you can prove.
Engineer real-time behaviour for robots and drones - PREEMPT_RT Linux, Xenomai, FreeRTOS/Zephyr, CPU isolation and IRQ affinity, scheduling policies, ros2_control loops, DDS/QoS tuning, deadline budgets and measured worst-case latency with jitter analysis. Use when a control loop misses deadlines, the user needs deterministic timing, chooses an RTOS, or must prove latency figures with measurements.
Includes an EXPERT.md reference (exact parameters, thresholds, failure diagnosis). Tested scripts: scripts/latency_report.py.
Acceptable use: civil and commercial applications only. Any military, paramilitary or weapon-related use is prohibited, as stated in the skill itself.
