PitlaneMCP - Codebase Navigation
Example session with this skill installed
I'm exploring the ripgrep Rust codebase. Starting from the main entry point, identify the shortest execution path that leads to a regex match being written to stdout.
Show the essential functions and their source files in execution order. Exclude alternative output modes and unrelated branches. Ground the answer in actual repository symbols, and retrieve only the code needed to establish the path.

Exploring ripgrep with PitlaneMCP
Task: Trace how ripgrep processes a regex search,
from its CLI entry point to writing matches to stdout.
Step 1 — Prepare the repository
The agent uses ensure_project_ready to check
the repository index.
Step 2 — Discover the execution path
Instead of reading entire source files, the agent
uses PitlaneMCP's navigation tools:
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
investigate | Discover relevant implementation details |
trace_path | Identify the execution path |
locate_code | Locate specific functions |
read_code_unit | Retrieve focused source code |
Step 3 — Produce an evidence-backed answer
The agent identifies the essential execution stages:
- CLI entry point and argument processing
- Search configuration and orchestration
- File traversal and input selection
- Regex matching and search execution
- Text output and stdout writing
The final answer should name the exact source files
and functions, with evidence from the repository.
Benchmark evidence
PitlaneMCP was evaluated against native agent
navigation on 19 ripgrep tasks, repeated three times.
| Model | Native quality | PitlaneMCP quality |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3 8B | 0.115 | 0.326 |
| Qwen3 14B | 0.143 | 0.277 |
Result: PitlaneMCP improved aggregate navigation
quality in both environments.
These are benchmark quality scores, not percentages.
The results measure the MCP server, not the additional
benefit of the companion skill.

About this skill
Navigate large codebases efficiently
PitlaneMCP is an open-source MCP server that provides code intelligence capabilities to AI coding agents.
This companion skill teaches agents how to use PitlaneMCP effectively, choosing the right tools for each task while minimizing unnecessary code retrieval.
Features
- Symbol-level code discovery and navigation
- Semantic and lexical code search
- Execution-path tracing
- Dependency and change-impact analysis
- Token-efficient source code retrieval
- Indexed documentation search
- Intelligent fallback to native agent tools
Compatible agents
Designed for coding agents supporting MCP and agent skills, including Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, and compatible environments.
Requirements
PitlaneMCP must be installed and configured separately.
The skill provides agent instructions and configuration examples. It does not include the MCP server binary.
Open Source
PitlaneMCP is free and open source, licensed under MIT OR Apache-2.0.
