Security remediation

Immediate fix

Use a parameterized query through the project’s database abstraction. Validate the ID as the expected type, but do not rely on validation alone to prevent injection.

Authorization

Check that the authenticated user is allowed to access the requested record. An unpredictable ID is not authorization. Return a safe response that does not reveal whether another user’s record exists.

Input and output handling

Validate route parameters, escape output for its rendering context, and avoid echoing raw database errors. Apply CSRF protection if the endpoint changes state.

Tests

Test normal IDs, malformed values, SQL metacharacters, unauthenticated access and cross-user access. Assert safe status codes and no data leakage.

Operations

Review logs for accidental exposure, update dependencies, enable static analysis and add the test to CI. Follow project version support and coding standards.

Rollout

Deploy the parameterized query with monitoring for errors and latency. Preserve a rollback plan, but do not revert to unsafe concatenation.

Measurement and review

Record the baseline, source, date range, denominator and owner. Use one primary measure plus quality guardrails; compare like-for-like cohorts and disclose missing data. Treat estimates as scenarios, not observed outcomes.

Risks and controls

Check relevance, consent, disclosure, workload and downside before scaling. Keep an evidence trail, obtain human review for material commitments, and pause if trust, quality or compliance signals deteriorate.
