Payment workflow

Checkout

Create a server-side payment session from a validated product and price. Do not trust client-submitted amounts. Use idempotency keys for session creation and associate a stable internal order ID.

Payment state

Treat the payment provider as a source of payment events, but keep the application order state explicit: pending, paid, fulfilled, refunded or disputed. Verify webhook signatures and event timestamps.

Fulfillment

Fulfill only after a verified successful payment event. Make fulfillment idempotent and record delivery status. Do not rely solely on the browser redirect.

Refunds and disputes

Route refunds through an authorized workflow with amount limits, reason codes and customer communication. Handle partial refunds and chargebacks. Revoke digital access only according to clear policy.

Reconciliation

Daily match provider transactions, internal orders, fees, refunds and payouts. Surface unmatched items for review.

Tests

Cover duplicate webhooks, delayed events, declined payments, timeout, refund race and fulfillment retry. Never store card data unless compliant infrastructure explicitly supports it.

Measurement and review

Record the baseline, source, date range, denominator and owner. Use one primary measure plus quality guardrails; compare like-for-like cohorts and disclose missing data. Treat estimates as scenarios, not observed outcomes.

Risks and controls

Check relevance, consent, disclosure, workload and downside before scaling. Keep an evidence trail, obtain human review for material commitments, and pause if trust, quality or compliance signals deteriorate.
