    What differs from the saved layout

    Three windows are open that the layout keeps in the Dock:

    • Projects - desktop 2
    • Invoices - desktop 2
    • Downloads - desktop 14

    The log shows no minimise step during the restore, so macOS had already reopened them in the Dock and they came out afterwards. Did you open them from the Dock yourself? If so, everything went as it should.

    About this skill

    macOS reopens Finder windows after a restart, but not where you had them. The project folder that lived on desktop 3 turns up on desktop 1, tabs are gone, sizes are reset, and rebuilding a multi-desktop setup by hand takes longer every time.

    What it does

    • Remembers every Finder window: the folder, every tab and which one was in front, size and position, view mode, sidebar, minimised state, and which desktop and display it lives on.
    • Puts them all back automatically at login, behind a full-screen please-wait cover so nothing gets in the way, then says when it is done.
    • Saves automatically, and never lets a save with fewer windows replace a good layout. The last 12 versions can be restored from the menu.
    • Re-places a screen's windows when an external display comes back.
    • Checks the screen against the saved layout and lists anything on the wrong desktop, at the wrong size, or missing.

    Every other app is left exactly where it is. Nothing is launched, hidden or moved. It never deletes or changes a file.
