MAVLink to MCP Bridge — Observe First, Act on Confirmation
Example session with this skill installed
Create a Python MCP server structure using pymavlink that implements the vehicle_status and health_report tools, including the BRIDGE_REAL_VEHICLE safety check.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the mavlink to mcp
I have designed the MCP server architecture for the MAVLink bridge. The implementation uses the mcp Python SDK and pymavlink to expose vehicle telemetry while enforcing the simulator-only safety gate for read-only operations.
MAVLink MCP Bridge Implementation
import os
from mcp.server.fastmcp import FastMCP
from pymavlink import mavutil
# Initialize MCP Server
mcp = FastMCP("MAVLink-Bridge")
connection_string = os.getenv("MAVLINK_CONNECTION", "udp:127.0.0.1:14550")
vehicle = mavutil.mavlink_connection(connection_string)
IS_REAL_VEHICLE = os.getenv("BRIDGE_REAL_VEHICLE", "0") == "1"
@mcp.tool()
def get_vehicle_status():
"""Fetch core telemetry: mode, battery, gps, and arming status."""
msg = vehicle.recv_match(type='SYS_STATUS', blocking=True, timeout=1.0)
gps = vehicle.recv_match(type='GPS_RAW_INT', blocking=True, timeout=1.0)
heartbeat = vehicle.recv_match(type='HEARTBEAT', blocking=True, timeout=1.0)
return {
"armed": heartbeat.base_mode & mavutil.mavlink.MAV_MODE_FLAG_SAFETY_ARMED > 0,
"mode": mavutil.mavlink.mav_mode_decode(heartbeat.base_mode),
"battery_voltage": msg.voltage_battery / 1000.0,
"gps_fix": gps.fix_type if gps else 0
}
@mcp.tool()
def get_health_report():
"""Monitor EKF, vibration, and system failsafes."""
vibe = vehicle.recv_match(type='VIBRATION', blocking=True, timeout=1.0)
ekf = vehicle.recv_match(type='EKF_STATUS_REPORT', blocking=True, timeout=1.0)
return {
"vibration_x": vibe.vibration_x if vibe else "N/A",
"ekf_flags": ekf.flags if ekf else "N/A",
"is_safe": not IS_REAL_VEHICLE or "SITL" in str(vehicle.target_system)
}
if __name__ == "__main__":
mcp.run()
Next steps
- Install dependencies via
pip install pymavlink mcp. - Start ArduPilot SITL to provide a local UDP telemetry stream.
- Test the
get_health_reporttool to verify the system ID check correctly identifies the simulator.

About this skill
Connect AI agents to vehicles without giving them the controls.
Design and build an MCP server that lets an AI agent observe a MAVLink vehicle (drone, rover, boat) - telemetry, mission state, health - with a small set of commands that each require explicit human confirmation and are blocked outside a simulator by default. Use when the user wants an AI agent to monitor or assist a PX4/ArduPilot vehicle, or connect Claude/Codex to a drone through MCP.
Includes an EXPERT.md reference (exact parameters, thresholds, failure diagnosis).
Acceptable use: civil and commercial applications only. Any military, paramilitary or weapon-related use is prohibited, as stated in the skill itself.
How to use
Skills on Agensi run inside your AI agent. Copy the prompt, paste it into your agent, and it connects to Agensi and installs this skill for you. If a payment is needed, your agent shows it to you first.
