Manuscript Hot Take: Honest Cold Read in Five Paragraphs

Example session with this skill installed

Give me a hot take on the draft in chapters/. Be honest.

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the manuscript hot take

Illustrative example of the output format; not a recorded execution.

Gut reaction. The opening got me fast. A drowned man's letter arriving in the keeper's mail on page three is a hook I couldn't argue with, and the first six chapters read in one sitting. Then I drifted. Somewhere around chapter 11 I realized I'd read four pages of lamp repair without wondering about the letters once, and I put it down.

What's working. Eli's voice. His dry, specific way of noticing things ("the kind of quiet that has a draft in it") carries scenes that would otherwise be static. The radio scene in chapter 19 is the best thing in the book. I read it twice. Mara's silences, once I understood them, land hard.

What's not working. The middle stalls: chapters 11 to 13 pause the central mystery for texture the book has already established. Mara's backstory arrives too late. I spent ten chapters reading her as cold when she's grieving, and that misread cost me sympathy I never fully got back. A few phrases also repeat until they become noticeable: the sea "keeping its own counsel" four times, a breath "they didn't know they were holding" three times.

The big question. When does the reader learn who Mara is? Almost every problem in the second act traces back to withholding that one fact too long.

Verdict. I'd finish it and I'd recommend it, with a warning about the middle.

    About this skill

Friends say it's great. Chatbots say it's great. Neither tells you that chapter 11 is where readers put the book down. Manuscript Hot Take gives your agent the stance of a real first reader: it reads the whole manuscript once, cold, then reports the experience honestly.

    What it does

Five paragraphs, always in this order:

    • Gut reaction: did it grab, and where did attention slip?
    • What's working: specific scenes, characters and lines.
    • What's not working: the weakest elements, unsoftened.
    • The big question: the single most important thing to address.
    • Verdict: one sentence. Would it keep reading? Would it recommend it?

    How it works

    1. Finds your manuscript: a chapters folder, a single file, or the Novel Engine layout.
    2. Reads prose only. No synopsis, outline, character sheets or notes, because a real reader doesn't have them.
    3. Reads every chapter, in order, once. Early confusion is reported even if later chapters resolve it.
    4. Writes the hot take in the chat. It never edits or creates files.

Why this beats asking "what do you think?"

Ask an AI for feedback and you get a balanced, hedged summary that could describe any book. This skill forbids the hedge ("it depends on your goals"), demands named scenes and lines, and reports the reading experience rather than prescribing fixes, so you hear what a reader felt, not what a craft book says.

    Use cases

    • Gut-check a finished draft before paying for a beta reader or editor.
    • Find the chapter where readers will drift.
    • Decide whether a revision actually fixed the problem.
    • Get a second opinion on someone else's manuscript you're critiquing.

    Known limitations

It's one reader's experience, not a developmental edit: no line edits, no structural report, no revision plan. .docx and .pdf should be exported to Markdown or text first. For the full editorial treatment, see Novel Engine.
