    About this skill

    The problem

External monitors on Apple Silicon often suffer from blurry text, awkward scaling, or limited refresh rates. Native macOS settings frequently lack hardware brightness and contrast control for non-Apple displays.

    What it does

    • Locks your display at native 1:1 resolution and the highest available refresh rate (up to 165 Hz) — deliberately avoiding blurry virtual-HiDPI downscaling.
    • Four font-rendering modes that fix blurry text on non-Retina and ultrawide panels, including a Reading mode tuned for long texts.
    • Hardware DDC/CI brightness, contrast and RGB color control directly from the Mac, with automatic software-gamma fallback over HDMI on M1/base-M2.
    • Display presets for Day, Evening, Movie (film-tuned for VA ultrawides) and Game, plus an automatic Day/Evening scheduler.
    • Detects and warns about signal issues like YCbCr color encoding (blurry, color-fringed text) and Night Shift conflicts.
    • Menu bar app with live sliders + background daemon. "Before MDO" restores your screen exactly as it was before installation, and a one-click uninstaller removes every file.

    Frameworks & tools

macOS 13+, Apple Silicon, Homebrew, Python, displayplacer, m1ddc.

Why this beats prompting it yourself

Manually configuring font smoothing, DDC tools and resolution wrappers means juggling multiple CLI utilities and LaunchAgents. MDO handles installation, login persistence and control in one audited package — with a full security disclosure (references/output-contract.md) documenting every file it creates, modifies and removes. No network access at runtime, no telemetry, never executes remote scripts.

    Permissions

    Terminal / Shell
    Read Files
    Write Files
    Network Access

    Allowed Hosts

    brew.sh
    pypi.org
    github.com

    File Scopes

    ~/MacDisplayOptimizer/**
    ~/.mac_display_optimizer/**
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mreurodisco.macdisplayoptimizer*.plist

Terminal/Shell runs the installer and the Python engine (displayplacer, m1ddc, defaults). File read/write stores settings in ~/.mac_display_optimizer and installs the app to ~/MacDisplayOptimizer plus two LaunchAgent plists for login persistence. Network Access is used ONLY during installation, when Homebrew/pip download the declared dependencies (github.com, pypi.org) — the program itself makes no network requests at runtime, collects no data, and never executes remote scripts. Browser access is not used. A full file-footprint disclosure ships in references/output-contract.md.
