Mac Disk Cleanup — Safe Audit & Free Up Space

Example session with this skill installed

My Mac is almost out of space. Can you find out what's taking it up and help me free some without breaking anything?

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the mac disk cleanup

Disk audit — nothing has been deleted yet

    Internal disk (/System/Volumes/Data): 115 GB used · 91 GB free (56%).
I ignored the / line on purpose: on modern macOS it's the sealed system volume and always shows ~12 GB.

    🟢 Regenerable — low risk (~5.3 GB)

    ItemSizeCommandWhat you lose
Docker images not used by any container4.0 GBdocker image prune -afThey're pulled again on next use
npm cache666 MBnpm cache clean --forcePackages re-download on next install
Homebrew old downloads247 MBbrew cleanup -sNothing
Homebrew orphan formulae (3)—brew autoremoveNothing; they were only dependencies
    pip cache155 MBpip3 cache purgeRe-downloads
Chrome Service Worker cache125 MB(Chrome closed) remove Default/Service Worker/CacheStorageWeb apps rebuild their cache
Next.js build cache in one project (has git + remote)84 MBrm -rf <project>/.nextRebuilt on next next build

    🟡 Your call

    ItemSizeNote
WhatsApp received media774 MBOnly Message/Media, app closed. Chats stay; old media may not be downloadable again
com.docker.install in Application Support2.2 GBNo app matches this bundle ID, but Docker Desktop is installed — likely installer data. Verify before removing
Downloads52 items untouched for 6+ monthsI can list them by size

    🔴 Do not touch

    ItemSizeWhy
Docker VM disk (Docker.raw)18 GBLive disk of Docker's VM. Shrinks after pruning inside Docker, never by deleting the file
Claude Desktop VM image9.4 GBVirtual machine in active use
Docker volumes (17)2.6 GBAll in use; no dangling volumes, so nothing to prune

    ⚠️ Security, beyond disk space

Downloads and Documents contain 6 .env files, 5 private keys/certificates (.pem, .key, .pfx), 1 VPN profile and 1 SQL dump. I didn't touch them, but they're in an exposed place. Consider moving them to an encrypted folder or a password manager.

    Reply

"run the green group" and I'll execute each command one at a time, measuring free space with df before and after, and report the real gain (it may be lower than the sizes above because of APFS clones). Docker's disk file can take a few minutes to reflect the freed space; I'll measure again at the end.

Connects securely to your tools. The creator never sees your data.

    About this skill

Your Mac says the disk is full, and every cleanup guide tells you to run docker system prune --volumes or wipe ~/Library blindly. This skill does it the safe way: it measures first, explains what each item is, and never deletes anything you haven't seen and approved.

    How it works

    1. Audit (read-only). A bundled script discovers what is actually big on your Mac — no fixed list of apps. It covers home and Library folders, app data (flagging leftovers from uninstalled apps), package manager caches, old runtime versions, Xcode/Android SDKs, Docker and VMs, build artifacts across your projects, chat media, browser caches, large apps with last-used dates, old downloads and any file over 1 GB.
    2. Investigate. Unknown folders are identified before anything else: which app owns them, cache or real data, is the app running, is it even on this disk.
    3. Categorize. Findings are split into Regenerable, Your call and Do not touch, sorted by size, with what you lose next to what you gain.
    4. Confirm and execute. Each command is shown before it runs, using each tool's own cleanup command when one exists. Free space is measured before and after.
    5. Report. Real measured gains, what was kept and why, and what is pending.

    Traps it knows about

    • "Dangling" Docker volumes that are actually your development databases
    • VM disk images (Docker, OrbStack, UTM, Parallels) that look like junk but are live disks
    • df -h / showing the wrong volume on modern macOS
    • APFS clones and offloaded iCloud files, where du doesn't match what's actually freed
    • Root-owned apps that break halfway with a plain rm -rf
    • Projects without a git remote — it deletes build artifacts, never the project
    • Chat apps that keep message history right next to their media
    • Browser storage that is not cache (deleting it logs you out of everything)

    Bonus: security findings

It flags private keys, certificates, VPN profiles, .env files and database dumps left in Downloads, Desktop or Documents — without touching them.

    Requirements

macOS. Works with the stock bash; every developer tool is optional and detected automatically.
