KDP Autopilot: Research, Build & Publish KDP Books

Example session with this skill installed

Make a kids' coloring book about ocean animals for ages 4 to 8 and get it ready to publish on KDP.

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the kdp autopilot

    Summary

    Built

Ocean Friends Coloring Book in a real session: 30 single-sided drawings, 64 pages, paperback 8.5 x 11 in. QA passed. Image cost: $0.68 (34 images incl. 3 regenerations, plus cover art), under a $0.70 cap.

    What happened

    1. Wrote 30 subjects (whale, octopus, sea turtle, seahorses, crab, dolphin, narwhal, otter...) from the template, one main figure each, no text.
    2. Submitted the line art as one Gemini batch; all 30 images came back in about 4 minutes and were cleaned to pure black and white.
    3. Reviewed every page on 3 contact sheets. Rejected 3 (pufferfish-round, sea-lion-sun, lighthouse-waves): each had a stray dot in the top-left corner that would have printed. Regenerated those once; the new versions were clean. 30/30 approved.
    4. Drew the cover art from the best pages and built the files.

    About this skill

Tell your agent "make a dinosaur coloring book for ages 4 to 8" and get a print-ready book and a submitted KDP title. KDP Autopilot knows the details that usually take weeks of forum threads and rejected uploads: trim sizes, margins, spine width from page count, full-wrap cover with the barcode box, free ISBN, AI-content disclosure, categories, 7 keywords, royalty math and weekly title limits.

    What it does

    • Setup: guided first run (disclaimer, studio folder, pen names, KDP account check, free test build).
    • Niche research: reads the real Best Sellers Rank of the top organic Amazon results for about 15 candidates and picks niches where new books sell.
    • Build: generates line art with Google Gemini (your key, about $0.66 per 34-image book), rejects frames, text, gray fills, bad anatomy and near-duplicates, then builds interior.pdf, cover.pdf and the listing, and runs QA.
    • Publish: fills in every KDP page in your Chrome at human pace (details, categories, keywords, ISBN, trim, uploads, AI questions, previewer, pricing), then A+ Content and Author Central.
    • Weekly cycle: research, build and QA up to 6 books a week, unattended; publishing always waits for you.

    You stay the publisher

    • The agent never ticks a legal declaration or clicks Publish without your explicit yes.
    • Any KDP warning or account notice stops the run.
    • Research stops at the first CAPTCHA and never solves one.
    • No brands or famous characters; titles only promise what is inside.
    • A weekly API spend cap (default $1.50).

Built and used to publish real titles in October 2026. No income claims: sales estimates come from public rank data and many books sell little. Not affiliated with Amazon.

Runs locally: needs uv, poppler and, for publishing, Claude in Chrome. macOS or Linux; Windows is not supported. Publishing always waits for your confirmation of the legal declarations. Niche research stops at any CAPTCHA. KDP changes its pages from time to time; the skill finds fields by visible labels and logs changes, and updates follow. Sales estimates are directional, not forecasts.

Shell: runs the local book engine (uv run --project <skill>/scripts/engine, pdftoppm) in the skill folder and the user's studio folder only; no sudo, no global installs, no scheduled jobs. Files: reads and writes books/ and work/ in the studio folder. Network: Gemini API for images with the user's own key; Amazon public autocomplete and search pages for niche research at human pace. Browser: fills in KDP in the user's own Chrome, only with the user present and after explicit confirmation. Secrets: the engine reads only GEMINI_API_KEY from the studio's .env file (never the process environment) and sends it only to the Gemini API; no other credentials are read.

    Frequently Asked Questions

KDP Autopilot automates the entire production chain—from identifying low-competition niches using BSR data to generating interior art and formatting print-ready PDFs—solving the common hurdles of layout errors and metadata optimization.

Claude Code with the Claude in Chrome extension (Chrome is used for niche research and publishing), uv with Python 3.12+ for the book engine, and poppler's pdftoppm to render page previews for QA. You also need your own Google Gemini API key and a free Amazon KDP account. macOS or Linux.

You will receive the complete source code for the niche research, content generation, and publishing workflows, along with the necessary configuration templates to connect your Gemini API key.

Research, building and QA can run unattended. Publishing always happens with you present: the agent fills in every KDP field and uploads the files, but asks you to confirm the copyright, content and AI-disclosure declarations before it ticks them or clicks Publish. If Amazon shows a CAPTCHA during research, the run stops and never tries to solve it.

Yes, the skill includes a weekly workflow that uses a `kdp.yaml` state file to manage recurring research and publication cycles, allowing you to maintain a consistent upload schedule.

While it specializes in interior art for coloring books and logic for word searches via the Gemini API, it is designed to format any paperback or hardcover layout that fits KDP's standard bleed and margin requirements.
