Janus: Positioning From Contradiction

Some products carry two opposed things that both have to be true. Private and social. Premium and free. Simple and powerful. Picking a side kills the product, so most positioning papers over the seam and comes out generic.

Janus does the opposite. It names the pair, bans the three exits your brain reaches for (pick one, split the difference, deny the tension), forces both sides to hold at once, and harvests the positioning out of what survives. It also runs backwards: point it at an existing design doc and it finds the contradictions being carried unnamed.

There is a fake-tension filter up front, because not every pair of opposites is a real one, and a quality gate at the end. Not for architecture tradeoffs or engineering decisions that should actually resolve.

Where this came from

Deliberon is a Windows desktop app that runs a council of AI agents on a hard decision and hands back a Decision Record: dissent preserved, every claim marked as proved, asserted, or estimated.

Janus is the method behind Deliberon's own positioning, which had to hold "private" and "a council" true at the same time.
