iPhone Duo Hinge, Displays and Cameras
Example session with this skill installed
Write a UIKit helper that requests a new window and shows a useful error if iPhone Duo cannot open it.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the iphone duo hinge
Here is a UIKit helper that handles a failed scene request and explains it to the user. It does not assume another window is available on the current display.
Window Request Helper
import UIKit
@MainActor
extension UIViewController {
func requestNewWindow(for activity: NSUserActivity) {
UIApplication.shared.requestSceneSessionActivation(
nil,
userActivity: activity,
options: nil
) { [weak self] error in
let details = error.localizedDescription
Task { @MainActor [weak self] in
guard let self,
self.viewIfLoaded?.window != nil,
self.presentedViewController == nil else {
return
}
let alert = UIAlertController(
title: "Cannot Open Another Window",
message: "Another window may not be available "
+ "on this display.\n\n" + details,
preferredStyle: .alert
)
alert.addAction(UIAlertAction(
title: "OK", style: .default
))
self.present(alert, animated: true)
}
}
}
}
Next steps
- Confirm multiple-scene support and handle the supplied activity in the new scene.
- Use
UIWindowScene.ActivationActionfor an availability-aware menu control. - Test successful activation on the inner display and failure handling on the outer display.
Connects securely to your tools. The creator never sees your data.
About this skill
iPhone Duo has a hinge, two displays and two front cameras. It is also the first iPhone that shows more than one window of an app. This skill helps your SwiftUI or UIKit app use these features and degrade correctly on other devices.
What it does
- Hinge: angle and fold state with
onHingeChangeandUIHingeInteraction, for interactions and effects, not for layout. - Split View multitasking: all apps take part, including the stacked video layout.
- Multiple scenes: handles
requestSceneSessionActivationerrors on the outer display and usesUIWindowScene.ActivationAction. - Scene accessories:
sceneAccessoryandCameraCaptureAccessoryfor a preview, a countdown or a teleprompter on the outer display. - Cameras: the virtual front camera,
AVCaptureDeviceDirectionCoordinatorand preview mirroring when the device opens or closes. - StandBy: a widget, so the app appears in StandBy on the outer display.
How it works
- A read-only scan and an SDK check show what compiles with your Xcode.
- The skill writes recommendations. Each one cites the Apple session it comes from.
- You approve each change. The skill applies it and builds.
Works with
SwiftUI and UIKit apps in Xcode. The hinge APIs, CameraCaptureAccessory, the direction coordinator and the physical front camera types need the iOS 27.1 SDK. sceneAccessory and UIWindowScene.ActivationAction work with earlier SDKs.
