Gossip: Technical Updates Explained Like Office Gossip
Example session with this skill installed
Use gossip to explain this: "INC-482 update: p99 latency on checkout-api spiked to 4.2s after the 14:05 deploy of v2.31. Root cause is suspected connection pool exhaustion from the new retry middleware. We rolled back to v2.30 at 14:40 and p99 is back to 310ms. Retry middleware stays disabled behind a flag until we load-test it. No data loss confirmed; ~3% of checkouts between 14:05 and 14:40 timed out and customers may need to retry."
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the gossip
Here's the tea: checkout got slow for about 35 minutes this afternoon, and a new feature looks like the culprit.
What happened: at 14:05 the team shipped version v2.31 of the checkout service (checkout-api). Right after, the slowest checkouts (the p99, meaning the slowest 1 in 100) went from snappy to 4.2 seconds.
The prime suspect: the new "retry middleware", code that automatically tries failed requests again. The theory is it hogged all the database connections the service shares, so everyone else had to wait in line. That is still marked suspected, not proven.
- The cleanup: at 14:40 they rolled back to v2.30, and the slowest checkouts are back to 310ms.
Who got hurt: about 3% of checkouts between 14:05 and 14:40 timed out. No data was lost, but those customers may need to try again.
- What's next: the retry feature stays switched off behind a flag until someone load-tests it.
What the update says vs. my read: it confirms the slowdown, the rollback and no data loss. It does not say yet whether anyone will contact the customers whose checkout timed out.

About this skill
Paste a technical message and ask your agent to explain it like office gossip. You get the gist first, then the details in plain words, told the way a colleague would catch you up at the coffee machine.
What it does
- Leads with the plain-language gist, with a playful opener like "Here's the tea".
- Translates jargon into everyday words. It keeps the technical names, numbers, status, conditions and caveats that matter, and briefly defines a term when it has to stay.
- Uses office roles and dynamics as a light analogy only when that makes the message easier to follow.
- Keeps it concise by default, and keeps important risks and next steps even when they make the story less dramatic.
What it will not do
"Gossip" is the tone, not the content. It does not invent motives, blame, conversations, relationships or events the source does not state. It marks uncertainty and keeps what the message says apart from any reasonable inference, so a guess never turns into a fact.
What's inside
SKILL.md, the instructions the agent follows.agents/openai.yaml, which adds the$gossipcommand in Codex.
