game design one thing to remove
Example session with this skill installed
Here is my design for a crafting system in a cozy farming sim. It has 4 grades of tools, 12 types of wood, 8 types of metal, a durability system, and a mini-game to determine item quality.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the game design one
- Generated the UI component
I have analyzed the crafting system for your cozy farming sim. While the variety is high, the friction points conflict with the "cozy" genre pillars.
Subtractive Design Critique: Crafting System
Design Read
The system aims to provide a sense of progression and mastery within a relaxing environment. It uses high material variety and a skill-based mini-game to differentiate players' output.
One Thing I Would Remove
The Durability System.
Why This Is the Highest-Leverage Cut
In a cozy farming sim, durability acts as a "maintenance tax." It forces players to leave their creative flow to engage in repetitive repair tasks. While it creates a sink for materials, it generates negative friction that outweighs the economic benefit, especially when layered on top of 20+ material types and a mini-game.
What Improves If Removed
Player Autonomy: Players can focus on farm layout and social interactions without the constant anxiety of tool failure.
- Pacing: The loop becomes "Gather > Create > Use" instead of "Gather > Create > Use > Repair > Gather."
- Inventory Management: You no longer need to track individual health bars or carry backup tools.
What You Lose
- A primary sink for base-level metals and wood.
- A slight sense of realism regarding tool wear.
How To Preserve the Good Part Without the Bad Part
Instead of tools breaking, use your 8 types of metal to create
permanent upgrades. A Copper Hoe never breaks, but a Gold Hoe has a larger action radius. This preserves the material sink and progression without the recurring chore of repair.
Verdict
Remove now. Durability is a survival mechanic that frequently clashes with the emotional goals of the cozy genre.
Next steps
- Recalculate material costs for one-time permanent upgrades.
- Adjust the quality mini-game to grant "Efficiency" buffs instead of "Condition" restoration.
- Test if the 12 types of wood are still necessary without repair loops.

About this skill
The problem
Game designs often suffer from "feature creep" where every problem is solved by adding more systems. This results in bloated, muddy, or overengineered prototypes that dilute the core player experience and strain production resources.
What it does
- Analyzes your game design, mechanic, or roadmap item to identify the single most damaging element.
- Explains the specific mechanism of improvement, moving beyond "cleaner" to focus on pacing, comprehension, and strategic clarity.
- Identifies redundant progression layers, low-value friction, and fantasy-diluting mechanics.
- Provides a value-preserving alternative to keep the benefits of a feature without its complexity.
- Delivers a concrete verdict on whether to cut immediately or prototype without the element.
Why this beats prompting it yourself
Standard LLMs tend to be agreeable and suggest additions to "enhance" your work. This skill is specifically tuned for subtractive critique, forcing a decisive choice on the highest-leverage cut rather than giving you a generic list of minor nitpicks.
Use cases
- Simplifying a combat system that feels too math-heavy for the intended audience.
- Streamlining a UI flow that requires too many clicks for a frequent action.
- Reducing content debt by identifying mechanics that don't contribute to the core loop.
- Improving player onboarding by cutting tutorial clutter and false choices.
