Game Art Director Specialist
Example session with this skill installed
Define the visual language for an original top-down wetland exploration prototype. Intended feeling: quiet vulnerability with enough confidence to keep exploring. The player must distinguish the explorer, collectible seeds and approaching hazards, and read facing. Seeds are safe; hazard arrival timing is a gameplay rule. No images, current palette, target resolution or engine budget are supplied. Give concrete silhouette/value/material/motion rules, exceptions, one populated explorer asset brief and dark/crowded gameplay-view checks. Mark color/scale proposals and inspection as unperformed. Do not promise generated assets.

Illustrative preview: this representative editorial result is not a recorded runtime session.
Use a shared wetland material language while giving gameplay categories different shapes. A common glow on everything would unify the mood at the cost of the distinctions needed to act.
Art direction WETLAND-AD01 v1
Status: COMPLETE_LOCAL for the proposed style guide and first asset brief. Visual inspection, rendered game view, recognition and runtime checks NOT_RUN.
Producer: Game Art Director Specialist. Recipient: artist and implementation owner.
Inputs: supplied top-down exploration, intended feeling, category/facing needs and hazard-rule boundary. No images were inspected; no current palette or budget is claimed.
| Rule ID | Concrete proposed grammar | Permitted variation / exception |
|---|---|---|
| WT-A1 identity | Explorer has an upright asymmetric upper silhouette with a single side-mounted pack; seeds remain compact rounded clusters; hazards use low, wide hooked profiles | Environment reeds may be angular, but cannot duplicate the explorer's full contour in its navigable read zone |
| WT-A2 facing | Pack offset and leading shoulder/head direction communicate facing in idle and movement | Decorative trailing cloth may vary, but never reverses the leading-direction cue |
| WT-A3 value hierarchy | Navigable ground stays in a subdued middle/dark value band; explorer outline and interactive seed center create locally stronger separation | Intentional atmosphere may hide distant scenery, not all immediate player-action cues |
| WT-A4 palette roles | Proposed cool blue-green world, warm pale explorer focal accent, restrained seed accent; hazard identity depends on hooked silhouette and approach motion as well as color | Exact swatches and contrast pairs await target/background evidence; no measured ratio or established token is claimed |
| WT-A5 material/detail | Soft matte wetland surfaces; coarse reed/soil detail kept away from immediate decision contours; finer detail is secondary at gameplay scale | Close inspection scenes may use more detail if the actual camera supports it |
| WT-A6 motion/VFX | Explorer gait stays controlled and readable; seeds have a small localized drift; hazards compress then approach in their supplied timing window | Art may communicate anticipation but may not extend the confirmed hazard arrival timing |
First populated asset brief ART-WT-EXPLORER-01
Purpose: distinguish the controllable explorer and facing at top-down gameplay scale.
Scope: original placeholder sprite family, not final rendered art.
Composition: upright asymmetry, side-mounted pack and clear leading direction. Keep compact feet/base so the silhouette does not masquerade as a hazard.
States: idle, moving, interacting and hit feedback if those states exist in the implementation; actual state inventory must be confirmed before ordering variants. Four facing directions are a proposed prototype approach, not a declared engine constraint.
Palette/material: subdued matte clothing with one warm pale focal accent. Colors are proposals; no palette source or target size is available.
Motion: retain pack-side cue while moving. Hit feedback follows actual damage state; an art animation cannot decide damage timing.
Import questions: target sprite dimensions, pivot, filter, atlas/pipeline, collision relation, frame budget and rights inventory remain for the implementer/artist. No numeric budget is invented.
Rights: use original work or explicitly cleared assets; a supplied reference would provide inspiration/context, not assumed copying permission.
Anti-example and correction
Giving explorer, seed and hazard identical circular neon auras erases role distinctions. Retain the shared world identity through palette/material and secondary motif; preserve distinct primary silhouettes and motion functions.
Criteria WT-AC1–4
- In actual normal/dark/crowded gameplay views, the three categories and their actionable relationship remain distinguishable; candidate images plus player recognition evidence are needed.
- Explorer facing remains readable in moving/interacting variants; inspect actual motion, not a large idle portrait.
- Important categories do not depend on color alone; grayscale inspection is a development aid, not universal accessibility proof.
- Seed/hit effects do not obscure approaching hazard direction or navigable path at the critical decision moment.
All checks are proposed and NOT_RUN. Next action: confirm target camera/resolution and state inventory, produce the bounded placeholder, inspect its composed gameplay views, then observe recognition. The guide provides production direction now without inventing a finished asset or player result.

About this skill
Make the next asset belong to your game.
Game Art Director Specialist turns your intended experience into a visual language that stays coherent across characters, environments, effects and interface elements. It replaces a loose collection of mood words with decisions artists and developers can apply.
The method considers what players must recognize in the actual gameplay view: identity, facing, threats, interaction targets and important state changes. It connects that reading task to silhouette, value, palette roles, materials, detail density and motion. Exceptions and anti-examples make the direction useful when a new asset does not fit the obvious pattern.
You can receive
- A concrete style guide with visual rules and permitted variation.
- Populated asset briefs covering purpose, composition, states and production questions.
- A localized critique and checks for dark, crowded or moving gameplay conditions.
For example, build a visual grammar for a quiet exploration game where the player, safe collectibles and approaching hazards share a world but remain distinguishable. The specialist explains how shape and motion support each role without letting every asset compete for attention.
Provide the game's promise, camera, target display, existing visual decisions and references you may use. The complete method and reference work independently of the other roles. AI access comes from your assistant; image inspection needs image tools, and generating or editing artwork requires an available visual tool. Art production and runtime integration remain part of your project.
