event timeline causal reconstructor
Example session with this skill installed
Here are the logs, deploy export, alerts, Slack export and my notes from yesterday's checkout outage. What happened, in order, and what caused it? My notes are in Central time.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the event timeline causal
- Generated the data export
Answer: The most likely trigger is the new_tax_engine feature flag enabled at 14:05:00Z (09:05 CDT, deploys.csv:4). Errors started 90 s later.
- Impact starts 14:06:30Z:
tax-api timeout after 3000ms(app.jsonl:3) - Detected 14:09:00Z: paged by PagerDuty (oncall-notes.txt:2, zone assumed UTC-05:00). Time to detect 2m 30s
- Recovered 14:43:00Z: rollback of checkout-svc to v2.7.3 completed on 6/6 pods (deploys.csv:7). Impact 36m 30s
- Candidate causes: flag change score 6.8 > deploy v2.8.0 started 5.9 > deploy complete 5.6
Data quality: edge-access.log ran
+95 s fast (median of 14 shared request IDs). After correction, 0 suspicious source pairs remain. Two silent gaps (5m and 9m 50s)
Deliverables: 51-event merged timeline from 6 sources, with every line cited as file:line, written to timeline.md, timeline.csv and timeline.json.
Next steps: confirm the flag change with its owner, add the 2m 30s detection gap to the postmortem, and alert on tax-api p99 earlier. Causes are ranked hypotheses, not proof.

About this skill
"Here are six files, what happened?" answered with file:line citations.
Drop in app logs (JSON lines, syslog, nginx/Apache), deploy and CI exports, PagerDuty/Opsgenie alert CSVs, Slack JSON exports and hand-typed notes. The skill normalises every timestamp format (ISO 8601, RFC 3164 syslog, CLF, epoch s/ms, US-style dates), asks which zone the naive ones are in, and builds a single UTC timeline where every event cites its source file:line.
- Clock-skew detection from request/order IDs that appear in two sources. It found a +95 s fast clock on the sample nginx log and corrects it with
--auto-skew. - Key moments: last change before impact, impact start, detection, recovery. Also time-to-detect, impact duration and detect-to-recover.
- Ranked candidate causes for any effect (
--why "regex"or an event id), scored on recency, shared entities and rare words. Chat that mentions a deploy never counts as a change. - Gaps where every source went silent, out-of-order lines and assumed zones are reported as data-quality notes.
- Output: terminal summary plus Markdown, CSV and JSON timelines for postmortems, insurance claims, customer disputes or audit trails.
What's included
SKILL.md, scripts/timeline.py, scripts/make_samples.py (fictional 6-source checkout outage), expected output, references (RFC 3339/3164/5424, nginx and Apache log docs, Slack export format, Google SRE postmortem guidance), tests.
