    electron-builder + Vite Packaging Fix

    electron-builder + Vite Packaging Fix

    Example session with this skill installed

    My Electron app is built with Vite and electron-builder. The mac zip is 480MB and a tester on an Intel Mac says it won't open. Can you fix the build config?

    • Read your context and instructions
    • Compiled the electron-builder + vite

    Two separate problems, one config change.

    1. The 480MB zip

    electron-builder writes to dist/ by default, and so does Vite. Your build.files includes "dist/**/*", so every build packs the
    previous build's zips and unpacked apps into app.asar. Nothing errors; it just keeps growing.

    electron-builder targets the host architecture. On an Apple Silicon Mac that means an arm64-only app.

    Fix

    "build": {
      "directories": { "output": "release" },
      "files": ["dist/**/*", "dist-electron/**/*", "!node_modules/**"],
      "mac": { "target": [{ "target": "zip", "arch": ["universal"] }], "artifactName": "App-macOS.${ext}" },
      "win": { "target": [{ "target": "zip", "arch": ["x64"] }], "artifactName": "App-Windows.${ext}" }
    }

    Add release/ to .gitignore, delete the old artifacts in dist/, and rebuild.

    Verify

    unzip -l release/App-macOS.zip | grep -E "app\.asar$|\.zip$"
    ditto -x -k release/App-macOS.zip /tmp/t && lipo -archs "/tmp/t/App.app/Contents/MacOS/App"
    codesign --verify --deep --strict "/tmp/t/App.app"

    Expect a small asar with no nested zip, x86_64 arm64, and codesign exiting 0.

    Note for your store page

    Without an Apple Developer ID the app is ad-hoc signed. Buyers need System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway on first launch,
    so say that on your download page.

    Connects securely to your tools. The creator never sees your data.

    About this skill

    electron-builder writes to dist/ by default, and so does Vite. If build.files includes "dist/**/*", every build packs the previous build's artifacts into app.asar. Nothing errors; the package just keeps growing. In the real case behind this skill, 433MB and 489MB zips became a 203MB universal macOS build and a 138MB Windows x64 build.

    What your agent does with it:

    • Recognises the symptoms: a huge app.asar, zips nested inside the mac zip, Intel Macs that never open the app.
    • Applies a working build config: a separate release/ output, a universal macOS target, and a Windows x64 zip built on macOS without wine.
    • Explains ad-hoc signing without an Apple Developer ID, and what buyers will see in Gatekeeper.
    • Verifies the result with five commands: asar size, architectures, codesign, asar contents and a launch check.

    What's inside: one SKILL.md. It changes only electron-builder configuration and ships no scripts.

    Compatibility: plain SKILL.md, no scripts. Your agent needs a shell to edit package.json, run the build and run the checks; the checks use macOS tools (ditto, lipo, codesign) and npx. Written from a real build with electron-builder 26 and Vite on an Apple Silicon Mac.
