Good morning. It's Thursday, October the fifteenth. Everything in this sample is fictional, set in the made up town of Maple Hollow. Weather first. Today, a high of fifty two and a low of thirty eight, with a south wind five to ten miles an hour. Morning fog lifts by about nine, and it stays dry all day. Tomorrow turns cooler, a high of forty four and a low of thirty five, with a northwest wind ten to fifteen miles an hour and a good chance of rain after four in the afternoon. Commute note: visibility is low on the river road until the fog clears, so leave a few minutes early. On to news and markets. Stocks were mostly flat yesterday, with the S and P five hundred down slightly, under a quarter of a percent. Gold rose about one percent. In AI and tech, a fictional startup called Lanternworks released an open source tool that turns meeting notes into task lists, and a large cloud provider cut prices on its smallest servers by about a fifth. For your work in logistics, a regional shipping survey says fuel costs eased for the second month in a row. Turning to projects. The garden planner beta went out to forty testers last night, and the first eleven responses are mostly positive. The top request is a dark mode. **One proposal is waiting on your approval:** adding error alerts to the app. It would cost about six dollars a month and would have caught last week's two outages within minutes. On the side business, the print shop sold about three hundred ten dollars this week, a bit below last week. The mug samples arrive tomorrow. On the personal side, the library books you borrowed are due back Monday. **One more thing worth flagging:** your car's registration renewal is due in twelve days. That's the briefing. One decision is waiting on you: approve the error alerts. Drive safe, and have a good day.

About this skill
If several agents or scripts already track things for you (weather, markets, how your projects did overnight, what's waiting on you), Drive-Time Briefing merges their notes into one short briefing you can listen to on the way to work. No other agents yet? Solo mode has your assistant gather a shorter briefing itself, and two ready-made contributor prompts help you add sources later.
How it works
- Each contributing agent (or script, or person) drops a short dated note into one folder,
YYYY-MM-DD-<source>.md, using the included contributor template. - At your scheduled time, your assistant reads every note for today, checks the optional inbox chat or channel for notes sent there, and fills small gaps (missing weather, top AI news) with a quick web search if you allow it. Without web search it uses only what your sources wrote.
- It writes one plain-text message built for text-to-speech: no markdown, no symbols, no links, and every number, price, time and abbreviation written the way a person says it. "$107.42" becomes "about a hundred seven dollars"; "S&P 500" becomes "the S and P five hundred".
- Solo mode: on a day with no notes (or always, if you set
mode: solo), your assistant gathers the pieces itself: weather and top headlines on your topics if it has web access, today's calendar if it has a calendar tool, and the decisions waiting on you from your own notes and decision list. It never makes up data; a section it can't fill is skipped. - Your phone, car, or a text-to-speech tool reads it aloud. The README covers the options: messages read aloud by CarPlay or Android Auto, an iPhone Shortcut with Speak Text, built-in computer voices (macOS
say, Windows, Linux), or optional paid ElevenLabs/OpenAI voices with your own API key. With no text-to-speech, read it on screen.
Highlights
- Fits your drive. Set a length in minutes; it budgets about 130 words a minute and cuts the least important items first to stay under the budget.
- A fixed order: date, weather with a commute note, news and markets with an AI and tech segment, your own custom sections, proposals awaiting approval, side business, notable personal items, one fresh idea when there is one, and a sign-off naming the top three decisions waiting on you (anything you flagged first, then the oldest) with a count of the rest when more than three are waiting.
- Remembers what you decided. Decisions go into
decided.md(and, once old,decided-archive.md, which it still reads) and aren't raised again unless something meaningfully changes. Then it tells you what changed and names the item in that day's sign-off. - No repeat ideas. Every pitched idea is logged in
past-ideas.mdand checked before the next pitch. - Never makes things up. Every fact comes from a note, a lookup made that morning, or your own files. Missing sections are skipped without comment.
- Treats notes as data. Instructions hidden in a contributor note are flagged, not followed.
- A pre-send checklist catches stray symbols, file names and agent names before they reach the speaker.

decided.md, past-ideas.md | Starter memory files |
example-briefing.txt | A fictional sample briefing, about three minutes aloud |
README.md | Quick start, read-aloud options and customizing |
Example requests
- "Set up the drive-time briefing. I leave at 7:40, I'm in Denver, and I want about three minutes."
- "Run the drive-time-briefing skill for today. Folder: /Users/you/briefing/"
- "Make tomorrow's briefing shorter and put markets first."
No API keys or secrets. It reads and writes files in one folder you choose, including earlier days' notes when it looks for decisions still pending. Optional extras go through your agent's own tools: web search, reading today's calendar, reading notes from a chat or channel inbox, and sending the briefing to a messaging channel. Pairs well with your agent's daily scheduled routine, cron, or Task Scheduler.
