Freelancer discovery plan — illustrative pre-call draft

Goal: determine the underlying problem, desired outcome and whether a scoped next step is useful. Known: client requested a better website. All commercial and technical context remains unknown.

Agenda: 2 minutes agree purpose; 6 minutes current situation and desired outcome; 5 minutes scope/constraints; 4 minutes decision and commercial context; 3 minutes confirm fit and next step. Adapt rather than forcing every question.

Priority questions: “What prompted you to revisit the website?” “What should be different for your users or business?” “What works well today?” “Which parts need attention first?” “What content, systems or dependencies should we understand?”

With permission, explore commercial context: “How will you decide whether a proposal fits?” “Are there budget or timing constraints I should work within?” Do not treat a desired date as proven urgency or a contact title as authority.

Boundaries: clarify the problem without giving an entire implementation design away; if uncertainty materially affects scope, propose a focused paid-discovery phase transparently. Do not recommend this as mandatory without context.

Summary template: “We discussed [confirmed goal], [current constraints] and [known scope]. Open questions are [unknowns]. The proposed next step is [agreed action] owned by [confirmed owner], with [agreed timing]. This does not yet commit either party to a build.”

Fit/exit: if needs fall outside verified capability or expectations are incompatible, acknowledge that and suggest an honest alternative or decline. No guaranteed sale.

Execution notes: no client researched, call held, answers recorded or follow-up sent.
