Analyse monthly_sales.csv: compare 2024 revenue across the three regions, chart it, and tell me whether the gap is about scale or about pricing.

Data quality first — 37 raw rows → 36 clean
Three problems found, all handled inside a reproducible script:
| Issue | Where | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Missing revenue | East, 2024-03 | Linear interpolation → 129,500 (neighbours 117,800 → 141,200) |
| Duplicate row | North, 2024-07 | Deduplicated, one record kept |
| Missing metric | All rows | Derived avg order value = revenue ÷ orders |
Cross-check: the interpolated East March figure implies an order value of 159.5, almost identical to East's annual median of 159.4 and consistent with the 812 orders recorded that month.
Region comparison, 2024
| Region | Revenue (CNY) | Share | Avg order value | CV | H2 vs H1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| East | 1,835,200 | 43.1% | 159.2 | 0.173 | +27.9% |
| South | 1,405,600 | 33.0% | 160.1 | 0.169 | +26.8% |
| North | 1,022,100 | 24.0% | 152.0 | 0.130 | +20.0% |
What the numbers say
- The gap is structural, not a pacing problem: the three regions correlate at ≥0.996 month over month, so the ranking never shifts on its own.
- East leads North by 79.6%. East and South have almost identical order values (159.2 vs 160.1), so that 30.6% gap is volume, not pricing — 11,527 vs 8,779 orders.
- North's problem is price and momentum, not just volume: lowest order value (152.0, 5.1% below South) and the weakest second-half growth (+20.0%).
Deliverables written to the workspace
analyze_sales.py (reproducible pipeline with cleaning comments), region_revenue_comparison.png (200 dpi, four panels), region_summary.csv, analysis_report.md.
Limitations
The missing March figure is an estimate and is flagged in the chart. One year of monthly data cannot separate seasonality from trend — a second year is needed to test whether the North slowdown is cyclical.
Next steps
- Pull the same breakdown for 2023 to test whether North's H2 deceleration is seasonal or persistent.
- Split North's orders by product tier to confirm the low average order value is a mix problem.
- Choose the intervention from that mix analysis rather than from the headline gap.

About this skill
A reproducible five-stage workflow for real datasets — scope the question, profile and clean the data, run EDA, model it, then write a conclusion you can defend — plus five hands-on references that do the actual work: pandas 3.x behaviour changes and patterns, Excel workbook I/O with a working formula-recalculation script, safe MySQL/PostgreSQL access through SQLAlchemy, hypothesis testing and scikit-learn modelling with assumption checks, and chart standards for matplotlib/seaborn.
Includes SKILL.md (the workflow plus a delivery checklist), five reference files under references/, a working scripts/recalc_excel.py, and a README.
