Price the Hour, Not the Clay

At my first craft fair, I sold out of mugs by noon. I was thrilled, until I did the math that night. Each mug takes me about 45 minutes of hands-on time, spread over four sessions: throwing, trimming, glazing, and finishing. At $18 a mug, after clay, glaze, and firing, I'd paid myself roughly $6 an hour.

Selling out wasn't a win. It was a sign my price was wrong.

Now I price the hour, not the clay. I start with my hourly rate times my hands-on time, add materials and firing, then add a share of booth fees. My mugs went to $38. At the next fair I sold fewer, and earned more.

I've put my pricing worksheet at the end of this post.

I sold out at my first craft fair by noon.

I'd never been prouder. Then I did the math.

Each mug takes about 45 minutes of hands-on time, spread across four sessions: throwing, trimming, glazing, and finishing.

At $18 a mug, after clay, glaze, and firing, I'd paid myself about $6 an hour.

Selling out wasn't a win. It was a sign my price was wrong.

So I changed how I price. I start with the hour I'll spend, not the clay I'll use: my hourly rate times hands-on time, plus materials and firing, plus a share of booth fees.

My mugs went to $38. I sold fewer at the next fair, and earned more.

If you make things by hand: price the hour, not the clay.

Full breakdown of my pricing formula is in the comments.

1/ (149) I sold out at my first craft fair by noon.

Then I did the math and realized I'd paid myself about $6 an hour.

Here's how I price handmade work now

2/ (127) Each mug takes about 45 minutes of hands-on time.

Not in one go. Across four sessions: throwing, trimming, glazing, finishing.

3/ (143) At $18 a mug, after clay, glaze, and firing, that worked out to roughly $6/hour.

Selling out felt like a win. It was really a pricing problem.

4/ (84) The fix: price the hour, not the clay.

Start with your hourly rate × hands-on time.

5/ (81) Then add materials and firing costs.

Then add a share of booth or platform fees.

    6/ (78) My mugs went from $18 to $38.

I sold fewer at the next fair, and earned more.

7/ (107) If you make things by hand, run this math before your next market.

    Gaps to fill

    • An online-sales version of the formula (platform fees) would widen the audience, but the source doesn't cover it.
    • A before/after monthly income figure would strengthen the result, if the creator wants to share it.

    About this skill

Most repurposing tools fail in two ways: the posts sound like a robot, or they quietly make things up. Invented stats, fake quotes, and hype you never said hurt your credibility, and in health, finance, or legal fields they create real risk.

This skill writes posts from what your source actually says, in your voice, and checks every one before you publish.

    What it does

    • Mines the source first. It breaks your content into a numbered inventory of ideas, stories, data points, quotable lines, and steps, each with its exact source wording.
    • Picks your strongest material and maps it across platforms so posts don't repeat each other.
    • Writes native posts for LinkedIn, X threads, Threads, Instagram carousels and captions, short-video scripts (Reels, TikTok, Shorts), and newsletter sections. Each gets its own hook, structure, length, and call to action.
    • Matches your voice from 2–3 sample posts and strips common AI tells.
    • Runs a fidelity check. Every claim is traced back to the source. Untraced claims get removed, stretched claims get flagged, and you get a PUBLISH / REVISE verdict.
    • Plans 2 weeks of posting so the same idea never hits two platforms on the same day.

    What you get

    • Source inventory with your strongest ideas picked out
    • Platform-native posts with character counts and alt text
    • Fidelity Ledger showing where every claim came from
    • "Gaps to fill": claims that would help but aren't in your source
    • A 2-week posting calendar

    Who it's for

Creators, coaches, consultants, podcasters, B2B marketers, and anyone in a regulated field (health, finance, legal) who can't afford a post that says more than the source.

    Limits

It needs a source to work from; it doesn't write original content from scratch or paid ad copy. Platform limits change, so confirm any that matter before posting.
