Consulting Discovery Coach — Ask Better Client Questions
Example session with this skill installed
Illustrative discovery: A client says “we need AI to speed up reporting.” I have a 30-minute first call with the operations lead. I know no baseline, systems, budget or approval path. Create a prioritized agenda with six questions, why each matters, evidence to request and follow-ups. Do not assume AI is the right solution or invent client answers.

First-call discovery plan
Objective: understand the reporting problem and decision before selecting a solution. Current facts: the client requested AI and faster reporting; a 30-minute call with the operations lead is planned. The cause, baseline and feasible solution are unknown.
Agenda
0–3 minutes: confirm purpose and desired decision.
3–12: examine one recent reporting cycle.
12–20: identify bottlenecks and quality constraints.
20–26: clarify stakeholders, access and approval path.
26–30: summarize unknowns and agree a proportionate next step.
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence / follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Which report and decision should improve first? | Bounds scope and business value | Ask for one sanitized report and its audience; if broad, choose one use case |
| Walk me through the most recent cycle from input to approval | Reveals actual handoffs rather than assumed causes | Request timestamps/process notes; clarify rework and waiting time |
| Where does time go, and how was that measured? | Separates measured friction from perception | Baseline cycle time and effort; if unavailable, design lightweight measurement |
| What errors or risks must the new process avoid? | Defines quality and control constraints | Review criteria, corrections and approval requirements |
| Who owns data, systems and final approval? | Identifies perspectives and access boundaries | Stakeholder map; involve data owner and reviewer with authorization |
| What would justify proceeding, and what constraints apply? | Establishes decision criteria, timing and commercial limits | Ask permission before sensitive budget/security detail; allow refusal and use ranges if appropriate |
Questions to adapt after answers
If waiting dominates, investigate handoffs and approvals before automation. If manual data preparation dominates, inspect source quality and repeatability. If writing dominates, test whether standardized templates or a controlled AI draft would help. These are branching hypotheses, not client facts.
Minimum evidence request
One sanitized example report, process steps, available timestamps, known correction themes and the approval requirements. Request only authorized material; no passwords or unrestricted system access.
Call note structure
Fact/source; stakeholder statement; hypothesis; constraint; decision criterion; open question; agreed action/owner/date. Keep “planned” separate from “agreed.”
Close
“Let me check that I understand the priority and remaining uncertainty. Would reviewing one reporting cycle and its evidence be a useful next step before recommending a tool?”
No AI solution, fee, savings estimate or commitment is presumed. No client answers were invented, and no call was booked, message sent or record changed.
Connects securely to your tools. The creator never sees your data.
About this skill
Build a stronger foundation before proposing a solution
Consulting Discovery Coach helps consultants, agencies and advisory teams prepare diagnostic conversations and synthesize supplied notes. It connects each question to an evidence need, appropriate stakeholder and useful follow-up.
It supports problem framing, symptom-versus-cause separation, stakeholder perspectives, requirements discovery, opportunity qualification, decision-context mapping, workshop preparation and discovery-to-recommendation handoff. Outputs include prioritized agendas, question plans, note structures, hypotheses, evidence gaps and next actions.
Tools and transcripts are optional. Without them, it works from supplied context and prepares manual artifacts. It never invents a client answer, meeting, approval, booking or CRM update. Sensitive questions explain relevance and allow refusal. It preserves qualified professional authority in high-stakes domains and avoids turning discovery into a disguised pitch.
