chatty: Instagram DM automation on your own Firebase
Example session with this skill installed
Set up Chatty for my bakery's Instagram (@panaderia.luna). I want people who comment "MENU" on my posts to get the menu link by DM. I have a Google account and a GitHub account, nothing else yet.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the chatty
Great, let's get @panaderia.luna answering "MENU" comments by itself. Here's the plan, then two quick questions.
The plan (about 1–2 hours, most of it in Meta's dashboard)
| # | Step | I do | You do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | See it running | Copy Chatty to ~/panaderia-chatty, git init, npm install, npm run dev | Open localhost:3000 and look around (guided mode, sample data) |
| 1 | Firebase | Create the project, Firestore, the web app; deploy the security rules | firebase login, switch the project to Blaze, enable Google sign-in |
| 2 | Meta | Tell you exactly which screens and buttons; generate the webhook token | Create the Instagram app, copy its app id and secret, add yourself as tester |
| 3 | Variables | Write web/.env.local, generate the encryption key and cron secret | Paste the Meta secret yourself if you prefer |
| 4 | Deploy | Fill apphosting.yaml, create the secrets, create the App Hosting backend | Approve the GitHub connection in Firebase |
| 5 | Heartbeat | Create the Cloud Scheduler job that runs every minute | — |
| 6 | Connect + first automation | Give you the exact redirect and webhook URLs for Meta | Connect Instagram, then comment "MENU" from a second account |
Your automation will be
trigger "comment on a post",
keywords menu, menú, a public reply like "Sent it to your DMs! 🥐", and the
private DM with your menu link.
Before I start
- Is @panaderia.luna already a
professional account (Business or Creator)? If not, switch it in the Instagram app under Settings › Account type; it takes a minute.
2. What's your menu link? (A PDF on Drive, your website, anything public.)
Meanwhile I'm running Step 0. When the dev server is up, open http://localhost:3000: the
Primeros pasos checklist (the panel is in Spanish; I'll translate as we go) will be our progress bar, and it ticks itself as each step really works.
Heads-up so nothing surprises you: Meta only lets you reply to a comment with
one private text message, within 7 days, so the DM will be text with the link (no buttons).
Connects securely to your tools. The creator never sees your data.
About this skill
Chatty is a complete Instagram DM automation panel that you own. It runs on your Firebase project, with your data, and there's no monthly subscription or per-contact fee: for one person or a small team, Firebase usually costs cents a month.
This skill contains the whole app (Next.js 16 + Firebase) and a step-by-step playbook that lets your agent take you from zero to your first automatic DM: it runs the terminal work, tells you exactly what to click in Firebase and Meta, and checks each step before moving on.
What you get
| Inbox | Every Instagram DM in one live inbox, open/closed, with who answered: the bot or you. |
| Automations | Keyword in a comment, keyword in a DM, story replies, first message, default reply. The classic "comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the link", with random public replies so it doesn't look robotic. |
| Flow builder | Drag and drop: messages, buttons, links, quick replies, questions that save the answer, "ask them to follow", waits, conditions, tags, hand-off to a human and calls to your own API. Ships with a 55-node example flow. |
| Contacts | Everyone who wrote or commented, with tags, notes and the data your flows captured. |
| Analytics | Followers day by day, reach, views, likes, comments, your posts and best hours. Collected hourly, because Meta doesn't keep history. |
| Claude assistant (optional) | Describe an automation in a sentence and it builds it in your account. |
| Mobile app | A PWA at /m with its own push notifications: new comments, unanswered DMs, flow checkpoints. |
| Your brand | Name, logo and color for the panel and the phone icon. Great if you install it for clients. |
How it works
- Guided mode first. Your agent runs
npm run devand you see the whole system in 2 minutes, with sample data and a checklist per section. No accounts needed yet. - Firebase. It creates the project, Firestore, the web app and deploys the security rules. You sign in and switch to the Blaze plan.
- Meta. It walks you through creating the Instagram app (the screens that trip everyone up) and generates the webhook token.
- Deploy. Environment variables, secrets in Secret Manager, Firebase App Hosting from your private GitHub repo, and a Cloud Scheduler heartbeat every minute.
- First automation. Connect Instagram, create "comment GUIDE", comment from a second account and watch the DM arrive.
Plan on one to two hours, most of it in Meta's dashboard.
Requirements
- An agent with terminal access (Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, Gemini CLI…)
- Node.js 20+, git, the Firebase CLI and the Google Cloud CLI
- A Google account with billing for Firebase Blaze (pay as you go; usually cents)
- A professional Instagram account (Business or Creator) and a free Meta developer account
- Optional: a Claude API key for the assistant
Good to know
- The panel UI and the long-form guides are in Spanish. It was built for Spanish-speaking businesses. Your agent reads the guides and explains each step in your language.
- Meta's rules apply: 24-hour messaging window, one private text reply per comment within 7 days, and accounts without a role in your Meta app need App Review.
- Everything is yours. Each copy is independent; nothing is sent to the author.
- MIT licensed source, TypeScript strict, with tests for the flow engine and the analytics.
How to install
Works the same in every agent - Claude, Cursor, Codex, Copilot and 20+ more.
