Bulk Budget Dashboard from a Year of Bank and Card CSVs
Example session with this skill installed
Here's a year of exports from my checking account and my Amex card (checking_export.csv and amex_export.csv). Can you build me a budget dashboard showing where my money went, and tell me which subscriptions I'm paying for?
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the bulk budget dashboard
- Generated the data export
Summary
I ran the dashboard builder over both exports in one pass:
python scripts/build_dashboard.py "checking_export.csv:label=Checking" "amex_export.csv:label=Amex" --out-dir finance_dashboard
- 2 accounts, 352 rows read, 321 counted. Period: 2025-09-01 to 2026-08-28 (12 months).
Checking: 106 rows. Columns auto-mapped as date = Posting Date, description = Description, amount = Amount. Dates read as MM/DD. Signs kept as exported.
Amex: 246 rows. Columns auto-mapped as date = Date, description = Description, amount = Amount. Dates read as MM/DD.
Assumption: the Amex export lists charges as positive numbers, so its signs were flipped (233 of 234 spending rows were positive; confidence high).

Large one-offs: Harborview Hotel ($512.40, 2026-03-20, "10x your typical purchase") and Bluejay Airlines ($418.60, 2026-03-04).
Excluded from totals, and why
12 card payments, matched on both sides ($12,768.99): each monthly AMEX EPAYMENT ACH PMT from checking was paired with the Amex AUTOPAY PAYMENT - THANK YOU for the same amount. They're left out so card purchases aren't counted twice.
6 transfers to savings ($3,000.00): six $500.00 Online Transfer to SAV ...7781 rows. They're excluded as transfers, not spending. The savings export wasn't included, so they couldn't be paired.
1 duplicate: Corner Bistro, $64.80 on 2026-04-25 and again on 2026-04-26 (same merchant and amount within 3 days). The second row was excluded as a pending-to-posted repeat.
1 refund netted: Harborview Hotel gave back $86.00 on 2026-03-27. It was subtracted from Travel, not counted as income.

Files written (finance_dashboard/)
dashboard.html: the self-contained dashboard. It works offline and loads nothing external.dashboard.json: every figure above, in machine-readable form.transactions_categorized.csv: all 352 rows with merchant, category, account and the reason each excluded row was left out.
Next steps
- Open
dashboard.htmlto see the recurring list and the Review section.
Change any category you'd file differently. For example, Maple Vet Clinic landed in Healthcare; add {"merchants": {"MAPLE VET CLINIC": "Pets"}} to my_finance_rules.json and re-run with --rules my_finance_rules.json. If the Corner Bistro charge really was two separate meals, add "keep_rows": ["a2d6ce19cf"] to that file.
3.
Next month: add your savings export so those transfers pair up, and bring the rules file so your fixes carry over.

What you get
About this skill
Drop in the CSV exports straight from your bank's website: checking, savings, and credit cards, a year at a time. Don't rename columns or clean anything up first. You get back:
- A dashboard file you can open in any browser. Income vs spending by month, where the money went, savings rate, top merchants, and spending spikes. It works offline, prints cleanly, and reads on a phone.
- A subscription and recurring-charge finder. Every recurring charge, with its cadence, its annual cost, price increases, and ones that look cancelled.
- A categorized spreadsheet (CSV) of every transaction, ready for Excel or Google Sheets.
It handles the exports that break DIY budget tools:
- Column layouts from US, Canadian, and UK banks are auto-detected, split Debit/Credit columns included.
- Excel-saved files work, as do $1,234.56 and (15.99) amounts.
- Day/month vs month/day dates are detected per file and the assumption is reported, never silently guessed.
- Credit-card exports where charges show as positive are detected automatically.
The figures stay honest: transfers between your own accounts and credit-card payments are excluded, so spending is never double counted and transfers never pose as income. Refunds net against the category they belong to. Pending-then-posted duplicates are caught.
545 built-in merchant rules cover US, Canadian, and UK retailers. Corrections go in your own rules file and stick on every re-run. Every calculation runs in a script, in exact cents. Claude never adds up rows by hand, and the script makes no network calls (a test enforces this), so your financial data stays local.
