Brief Check
Example session with this skill installed
Brief: rebrand of a family pastelaria (est. 1962) in Aveiro. New owners (the grandchildren) want it 'authentic but contemporary'. They want a new logo, new menu design, and a social launch. No budget given. No deadline given.
- Read your context and instructions
- Compiled the brief check
Hypothesis
- Goal: the new owners are taking over a 60-year-old Aveiro pastelaria and want a visual identity (logo, menu) and a social launch that mark the handover without losing what made the place loved.
- Audience: probably the existing local regulars, plus a younger crowd the owners hope to bring in. The brief doesn't say which matters more.
- The one job: make the place look and feel new without making the old customers feel dropped.
I'm about 55% sure this is the brief. The goal is clear. The audience and the success measure are guesses.
Five questions, most important first
What stays untouched? The brief doesn't say if the name, the signature pastries, the shopfront, the old logo or the packaging are fixed. Recommended answer: the name and the signature products stay, and the logo evolves from the existing mark instead of replacing it. [VERIFY: whether the current logo has any equity, or whether it is just a sign painter's lettering.]
What does success look like six months after launch? Recommended answer: pick one measure, such as footfall from under-35s, or tourist visits. The usual alternative, "more followers", is weak for a shop that sells at the counter.
Who is the customer you most need to win? Recommended answer: keep the regulars and add a younger local crowd. Tourists would be a separate, later job. If the owners want tourists first, the menu, languages and social strategy all change.
What is the budget range, and what is the deadline? Neither is given, and they decide how much we can do. Recommended answer: ask the owners for a ceiling and a date, even a rough one. If they can't give either, assume the scope is logo, menu and a four-week social launch, and quote that.
What does "social launch" cover? The brief doesn't say which channels, how long it runs, who creates content, or who runs the accounts afterwards. Recommended answer: Instagram only, four to six weeks, with the owners supplying photos and us supplying the plan and templates. [VERIFY: whether the shop already has accounts and an audience to build on.]
One overloaded phrase: "authentic but contemporary"
Every heritage rebrand says this, and it can mean very different things. Which of these do the owners mean?
Keep the craft visible: hand-made look, old recipes and the family story up front, with a cleaner layout around them.
Keep the warmth, change the look: a modern, minimal identity, but a tone of voice that still sounds like a family shop.
Keep the product, change the attitude: the pastries and place stay as they are, and the brand speaks to a younger crowd in a lighter voice.
What I'd need answered before writing
- What stays untouched: name, products, shopfront, current logo?
- The success measure six months after launch.
- The priority customer: regulars, under-35s locals, or tourists.
- Budget ceiling and deadline.
- The social launch scope: channels, length, who makes the content.
- Which meaning of "authentic but contemporary" the owners want.

About this skill
A free sample of Brief Interrogator. Paste a brief, or the three lines a client sent you, and say "check this brief". You get one round, and then it stops.
What you get back
- The hypothesis. The goal, the audience and the one job the work has to do, in three lines, with a confidence figure ("about 60% sure this is the brief").
- Five questions, numbered, most important first, each with a recommended answer you can accept or correct from your phone.
- One overloaded word ("premium", "young", "authentic", "modern") turned into two or three precise meanings, so you can pick.
- The closing line, "What I'd need answered before writing", and the list.
It writes no copy, no concepts and no headlines in this pass. It never asks you to repeat what is already in the brief, and it invents nothing about the client or the market: a guess is marked [VERIFY].
Tested before launch. Four briefs (a yoga studio, a B2B SaaS campaign, a local election flyer, a family bakery rebrand), each run with and without the skill and graded blind against checks written in advance: 20 of 20 with Brief Check, 3 of 20 without. Without it, Claude wrote slogans and post ideas before asking a single question.
The full Brief Interrogator runs as many rounds as needed until the brief reaches about 95% confidence, fetches the facts itself instead of asking, and turns client-side gaps into a ready-to-send discovery questionnaire.
