    About this skill

appium-cli – Mobile Automation for AI Agents

Give your AI coding agent the ability to control and test mobile applications directly from the terminal.

appium-cli is a powerful, AI-friendly command-line interface built on top of Appium. It provides developers and AI agents with a simple, predictable way to interact with Android and iOS applications across emulators, simulators, and real devices.

Instead of relying on an Appium MCP server, appium-cli exposes mobile automation capabilities through straightforward terminal commands, structured JSON responses, and predictable exit codes.

Whether you're using Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or another AI coding agent, appium-cli makes mobile automation accessible with minimal setup.

    Why appium-cli?

Traditional mobile automation often requires writing complex selectors, managing automation scripts, and configuring additional integrations for AI agents.

    appium-cli simplifies this experience.

    • AI-Agent Ready: Designed specifically for AI agents, with structured --json and --ai output that agents can easily understand and process.
    • No MCP Server Required: Give your AI agent access to Appium through standard CLI commands instead of setting up an MCP integration.
    • Semantic Interaction: Use commands like tap "Sign in" or type "Email" "user@example.com" instead of manually writing XPath selectors.
    • Cross-Platform: Automate Android and iOS applications on emulators, simulators, and real devices.
    • Powerful UI Inspection: Inspect UI hierarchies, discover locators, retrieve element attributes, and capture screenshots.
    • Scriptable & CI-Friendly: Predictable exit codes and machine-readable responses make it suitable for automated workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
    • Session Management: Create, attach, switch between, and manage multiple Appium sessions.

What can your AI agent do?

Your agent can interact with mobile applications using simple commands:

    CapabilityExample
    Tap elementstap "Login"
    Enter texttype "Email" "user@example.com"
    Swipe & scrollswipe up
    Wait for elementswait "Dashboard"
    Inspect UIdump-ui --simplified
    Find locatorsinspect-locators "Continue"
    Take screenshotsscreenshot --out ./screen.png
    Manage applicationsLaunch, install, terminate, uninstall
    Handle gesturesDouble-tap, pinch, drag, long-press
Manage device stateOrientation, clipboard, keyboard, permissions
Inspect system dialogsRead, accept, or dismiss alerts

    And much more.

    Quick Installation

    1. Install appium-cli

Make sure Node.js 18+ is installed.

    npm install -g appium-cli

    2. Install the agent skill

    For Claude Code:

    appium-cli skill install claude

    For Cursor:

    appium-cli skill install cursor

    For Codex:

    appium-cli skill install codex

This installs the bundled instructions that teach your AI agent how to use appium-cli, including available commands, workflows, and troubleshooting.

    3. Connect to Appium

Start your Appium server and connect to your device:

    appium-cli connect \
      --server http://127.0.0.1:4723 \
      --caps ./caps.json

    4. Start automating!

    Ask your AI agent:

    • Open the application and log in.
    • Find the registration screen and inspect its fields.
    • Enter test data and submit the form.
    • Take a screenshot and verify the result.
    • Explore the application and identify potential issues.

Your agent can use appium-cli to execute these actions directly.

    Requirements

    • Node.js 18 or newer.
    • A running Appium 2.x+ server.
    • Appropriate Appium drivers (UiAutomator2 for Android or XCUITest for iOS).
    • A configured emulator, simulator, or real device.

Some iOS device preparation and signing utilities require macOS and Xcode.

Important: appium-cli does not replace Appium or its drivers. It provides a more convenient, AI-friendly interface to your existing Appium infrastructure.

    Who is this for?

    • QA Engineers and SDETs building AI-powered testing workflows.
    • Developers who want AI agents to interact with mobile applications.
    • AI Agent developers building autonomous mobile testing solutions.
    • Teams integrating mobile automation into CI/CD pipelines.

    Frequently Asked Questions

This skill acts as a specialized bridge between an AI agent and the Appium server, converting high-level semantic commands into stable JSON-formatted outputs that prevent the fragile selector errors common in standard LLM-generated scripts.

Yes, the session lifecycle management feature allows the agent to attach to an existing session ID, enabling it to pick up a workflow exactly where a previous process or manual session left off.

The skill is designed to work with any agentic framework that can execute terminal commands, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or custom LangChain agents, provided they can parse JSON CLI outputs.

Unlike standard tools that might just return a generic error, this skill automatically generates a UI dump and screenshot upon failure, providing the agent with the immediate context needed to self-correct the locator or action.
