Agents · Hermes Agent — First Seven Days (Fable 5.1)
Example session with this skill installed
I installed Hermes yesterday, connected three models, Telegram, Discord and the dashboard, saved everything to memory and set up five profiles. Now it feels chaotic and a cron job keeps sending me walls of text. Where do I start?

Summary
Your setup was written down as a plan and linted first: it fails on the classic first-week mistakes. Below is the linter output, then the fixes in order, then the corrected plan passing.
Linter, current setup (plan_draft.json)
$ python3 scripts/first_steps_check.py plan_draft.json
WARN models.background not set — background and cron work will run on the expensive default
WARN cron 'everything' has no ignore-list — expect noise
WARN sub-agent job is vague ('research stuff') — give a narrow scope and a clear output
WARN 5 profiles in the first week — one specialist at a time
FAIL models.default looks like a cheap model ('cheapest mini model') — hard work needs the strongest model you can afford
FAIL 5 surfaces at the start — one model, one surface, one workflow; add doors later
FAIL first_workflow.task missing or too short — get one useful job done before configuring more
FAIL memory holds temporary chatter ('On Tuesday we talked about maybe making a video so…') — save stable preferences and facts only
FAIL memory holds task progress ('Still working on the landing page, next step is th…') — memory is for stable facts, not to-do state
FAIL memory holds a procedure ('How to write scripts: open the template, fill hook…') — procedures belong in a skill
FAIL cron 'everything' is not self-contained — missing where, criteria, deliver (jobs run in fresh sessions)
FAIL cron 'everything' says 'check everything/what matters' — name what to check and what counts
FAIL cron 'everything' has no output limit — it will become a data dump
FAIL 14 tools enabled at the start — enable only the tools of the first workflow
FAIL sub-agent 'research stuff' is not verified by the main agent — outputs must be checked
FAIL 5 profiles but no workflow — build workflows first, specialists later
RESULT: FAIL (12 violation(s), 4 warning(s))
Fixes, in order
| Day | Change | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keep desktop plus Telegram; disconnect Discord and the dashboard for now | one surface |
| 1 | Default model = your strongest; cheap model only for background and cron | model ladder |
| 2 | First workflow: the morning brief, run end to end once | one workflow |
| 3 | Move "how to write scripts" into a skill; delete progress notes and Tuesday chatter from memory | memory is curated |
| 4 | Enable only the two tools the brief needs, behind a human checkpoint | tools |
| 5 | Rewrite the cron: "check the last 24 hours of X in Y, return one urgent issue, one opportunity, one action, under twelve bullets" | cron returns a decision |
| 6-7 | Disable four profiles; keep one specialist once the brief works two days in a row | profiles after workflows |
Linter, corrected plan (plan.json)
$ python3 scripts/first_steps_check.py plan.json
RESULT: PASS (0 warning(s))
Next steps
- Run the day-one briefing test (Step 2 of the skill) before touching any other setting.
- Tomorrow morning: one twelve-line brief should arrive instead of a wall of text. If it does not, run
hermes doctorfirst.

What you get
About this skill
The problem
Installing Hermes is the easy part. The hard part is the blank chat box afterwards: Hermes lives on several surfaces, remembers how you work, builds skills, runs tools, schedules jobs, spawns sub-agents and runs specialist profiles. Most first weeks end with three models, five surfaces, a memory full of to-do notes and a cron job that sends walls of text.
What it does
- Gives the mental model: desktop, messenger, CLI and dashboard are one agent, not five products; pick one surface and one strong model, then run the day-one briefing test.
- Sets up memory the curated way: what belongs in USER.md and MEMORY.md, what belongs in a skill, a wiki or session search, and when exactly one external memory provider earns its place.
- Turns the first repeated correction into a skill, adds the one tool the workflow needs behind a human checkpoint, then one self-contained cron job that returns a decision instead of a data dump.
- Orders sub-agents (narrow, verified) and specialist profiles after the workflows exist, not before.
- Ships first_steps_check.py, a deterministic linter for your setup plan that fails loudly on the seven classic beginner mistakes (exit 0 or 1, --template, --selftest).
Frameworks & tools
Hermes Agent (desktop app, CLI or messenger surface) already installed; Python 3 standard library for the linter. No network access.
Why this beats prompting it yourself
Measured on the same task in two separate sessions: without the skill the delivered plan failed the linter on 5 rules (five surfaces, two procedures and progress notes in memory, eight tools on day one); with the skill it passed 0/0. The order of the seven days, the memory-vs-skill rule and the cron template are the parts a generic answer gets wrong.
Use cases
- "I installed Hermes yesterday and it feels chaotic" — the plan is linted, then rebuilt in order.
- Choosing a model per job (strong default, cheap background, long-context, local) without paying the strong price for cron work.
- Rewriting a noisy scheduled job into one that returns one urgent issue, one opportunity, one action.
Known limitations
Does not install Hermes (see the DevOps · Install and Harden listing) and does not set up bot-mode teams (see the Bot Teams listing). Note for reviewers: the linter is standard-library Python, reads one local JSON plan and makes no network access.
How to install
Works the same in every agent - Claude, Cursor, Codex, Copilot and 20+ more.
- 1
Download the ZIP
Free skills download straight away. Paid skills unlock right after purchase.
- 2
Unzip into your skills folder
Every agent reads skills from one folder on your machine. Drop the unzipped folder in there.
- 3
Ask your agent to use it
Restart the agent if it was already running. It picks the skill up automatically - no config needed.
