Open Design: Open-Source Claude Design Alternative with SKILL.md

Open Design brings Claude Design's artifact-first workflow to any SKILL.md-compatible agent.

Quick answer: Open Design is a free, open-source alternative to Anthropic's Claude Design. It works with Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, Codex, and 17+ other coding agents through the SKILL.md standard. It ships with 259+ skills and 142+ design systems.

When Anthropic launched Claude Design in April 2026, it introduced artifact-first AI design: describe what you want and the AI delivers a rendered design rather than prose. It went viral. But it was closed-source, cloud-only, and locked to Anthropic's model.

Open Design is the open-source response. Same artifact-first loop, no vendor lock-in.

    What Open Design does

Open Design turns your existing coding agent into a design engine. It ships with 259+ skills, 142 brand-grade design systems (covering companies like Linear, Stripe, Vercel, Airbnb, Notion, Supabase, and more), and 261 plugins. It generates web prototypes, mobile layouts, dashboards, slide decks, images, and videos.

The key difference from Claude Design: Open Design runs on any SKILL.md-compatible agent. Use it with Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex CLI, Cursor, Copilot, Hermes, Kimi, Antigravity, or any of 22+ supported CLIs. Swap models with one click.

    How it works

Open Design uses two file standards. SKILL.md files define the design skills (what the agent can create). DESIGN.md files define the visual system (colors, typography, spacing, motion, voice, anti-patterns) that every render follows.

You point it at a DESIGN.md system (either one of the 142 included ones or your own) and give it design instructions. The agent generates the artifact using those brand constraints. This means output looks like it came from a design system, not from generic AI generation.

    Getting started

Open Design is available on GitHub at nexu-io/open-design. It installs as a native desktop app for macOS and Windows, or runs through the CLI.

For SKILL.md users: Open Design's skills follow the same format used by the Agensi marketplace. If you already have skills installed for your coding agent, Open Design's design skills work alongside them. Browse frontend and design skills on Agensi for additional options.

    Open Design vs Claude Design

Claude Design is polished, integrated, and works seamlessly within Claude's ecosystem. Its limitation is lock-in: Anthropic's model only, cloud only, no customization of the skill set.

Open Design is rougher at the edges but infinitely more flexible. You choose the model, the design system, and the output format. Self-hosting works for teams with privacy requirements. The MIT license means you can fork and customize everything.

For teams already using SKILL.md skills from Agensi, Open Design fits naturally into the existing workflow.
