I build and modernize backend systems that other systems depend on: a cloud simulation platform used by engineers in aerospace, automotive, and photonics; DNS infrastructure serving millions of queries; a global vessel intelligence database; water networks; and data collection platforms used in public health. With 20+ years in, my core stack is Java, PostgreSQL, jOOQ, and Flyway, plus Ruby, Go, Node.js, and Elixir. As a Senior Software Engineer at Flexcompute, I work with the infrastructure team behind the company’s simulation platform. Flexcompute builds GPU-native physics solvers, Flow360 for fluid dynamics and Tidy3D for electromagnetics, that run in its own cloud and return results 10 to 100 times faster than traditional CPU-based tools, for customers ranging from aircraft and EV makers to photonics and display manufacturers. My goal is to improve both the platform those simulations run on and the software engineers use to drive it, so the solvers' speed isn’t lost in the systems around them. I’m also a Founding Partner at Kanikosen, where I designed and operate the data platform behind a global fishing vessel intelligence database: 1.5M+ vessels and ~400K linked entities consolidated from 200+ official sources, with 100+ tracked attributes per vessel, full per-attribute provenance and confidence scoring. The hard problem is entity resolution: tracking vessel identities through renamings, reflaggings, and ownership changes, including deliberately obscured ones. The database underpins 12 years of published investigations into illegal fishing, cited in 100+ academic and press works. Before Flexcompute, I spent six years as a Staff Software Engineer at DNSimple, evolving a long-lived codebase powering trust-critical infrastructure: domain management, DNS resolution, and SSL certificate provisioning, with SLA options of 99% and 100%. I led initiatives spanning transactional data and Big Data repositories (PostgreSQL, Redshift) and built delivery tooling that let a small team ship continuously without compromising availability. How I work: XP, TDD/BDD, domain-driven design, pair programming, continuous integration and delivery. I’ve spent most of my career turning large legacy systems into maintainable, future-proof platforms while shipping new features and mentoring teams to do the same. Earlier chapters include leading development on the Open Data Kit toolset at Nafundi and co-building BuntBrain at BuntPlanet, analyzing datasets scaling to 1 trillion rows a year. Outside work, I maintain open-source projects (Java time-series downsampling, Ruby testing matchers, git tooling), speak at conferences including Agile Conf Spain, and organize local developer communities.
